No, not from Canon to Nikon before anyone says anything :p

Ive been using CS3 for ages, but now Ive got my hands on Lightroom 2. Its certainly different. Initial reaction was, "Crap, I dont know where anything is!"

My question is, should I stick at it and get used to it, or stick with CS3?
 
Give Lr a real go imho. If you don't do heavy editing as in layers, masks, filters, then Lr is perfect.
 
Use them both. That's what I do. They'll both form valuable parts of your working process.
 
I actually find myself using Lightroom when I've not got enough time on my hands for processing work. I usually use Photoshop for fine tuning and things like that. One thing you'll notice with Lightroom is you can actually set it up to export images into photoshop when you're finished in Lightroom, by right clicking the image and choosing export. In the preferences you can set what application handles the export and I've got my one set to use Photoshop. It's a good way to chain the two together.
 
Is thre a trial verion of Light Room available I haveCS3 but ind it difficult to work around. Al I use it or it the auto-corrctions facilites, but I do like Capture NX as it's much simpler to use.
 
You can download demo versions of all Adobe products from their website.

I would highly recommend sticking with Lr and getting used to it. You should start to find that Lr and CS3 compliment each other perfectly and may even lean towards relying on the former once you have found yourself fully acquainted.

There is but you'll need use an existing Adobe ID or create a new one if you don't already posses one.

I have Lightroom but haven't a clue how to use it. My other half showed me very quickly this afternoon but think it will take a bit of getting used to. Persevere Betty and perhaps follow KayJays advice sounds good :)
 
Looks like I am having a good go then, Ill def keep both though :D
 
Good on ya Betty. You'll probably find some new things that will help you out that you'll be wondering why you didn't try something new sooner.
 
I went from Capture NX to Lightroom. IMO Capture is too resource hungry. LR is much easier to use and for 99% of images LR has enough adjustemnts. It took a bit of getting used to but the user guide is very helpful and I'm now up and running and starting to get more into it.

I would recommend it over CS3 because of its ease of use.

I've gone from 100% CS3 usage to 100% LR2 usage for workflow and light editing, plus loads of different exports. CS3 now gets used for serious editing only. A big thumbs up for LR2, it's saved me hours of processing time. Be sure to check out a plug-in called mapimailer if you send a lot of images via email.

Ill certainly stick at it then, I had to start somewhere with CS3 afterall :)
 
I don't think it's a case of either or (although for some it might be) as I generally start with LR2 to get the post processing started and then move onto Photoshop if it's required.
 
I don't even have PS installed any more but then i never edit photos i just process them, ie i don't blend pics or remove major amounts or add boarders or anything i just fiddle with saturation, clarity sharpness etc etc. There for LR is perfect for me and much easier to use than
PS once you get the hang of it
 
LR is great, stick with it, search youtube for videos and so on and browse the adobe forums and you will be well away my friend!
 
i adore lightroom, and i have been using photoshop since version 3! it doesn't make sense to do colour adjustments ect, in cs4 unless you need serious surgery then cs4 comes into its own, but LR is lightning fast for the initial stuff

also thank god they have sorted the 'edit in' thing out with LR>CS4 even the hdr and panorama exports work too!
 
Lightroom is great but won't do everything, whether you can just use LR depends on what you want to be able to do with your images. I use both LR and CS3 and do quite a lot of development just in LR but edit in CS3 when needed. IMO, they both work great together and make a good total solution for image development.
 
LR and CS3 are designed to complement not replace each other. There is some cross over in functionality, you need to decide if you need the more powerful organisation tools and raw processing tools in LR over those provided in CS3. Otherwise stick with CS3.
 
Dee, I had LR2 on a 30 day trial and loved it :thumbs: I found it was great for workflow and for a lot of PP.

I'm hoping to buy it soon..........anyone know the cheapest place at the moment? :)
 
...also there is the mac vs pc argument so it's 'aperture' all the way for me ;)
 
I think your style of photography also has some thing to do with it. I take a lot of sports shots and need to get them processed and uploaded quickly, so I use Lightroom as it is great for that. On the other hand, CS3 is great for the more advanced editing, HDR etc.

Another way to look at is that the develop part of Lightroom has pretty much the same controls as ACR, if you don't tend to do much more than process the RAW CS3 could be overkill, but spending £200 to get Lightroom when you've already shelled out for CS3 might not be the best idea either...
