Will dropping a lens cause it to lose sharpness??

A while ago my partner dropped my Nikon 50mm 1.8g from about waist height onto a wooden floor. I feel the image quality isn’t that great now and I thought it was just my imagination but recently looking at images taken before the drop, they look super sharp, even wide open. The lens works fine in all other respects. Can a lens get less sharp from being dropped but still seem perfectly fine?

I’ve been looking at upgrading to the 1.4g but it seems it’s not quite as good. So i might end up trading the 1.8g in for another used 1.8g...

Its a precision optical device. Dropping it can do damage. It could possibly be rebuilt and recalibrated. Sell on Ebay as spares or repair if you don't want to get it repaired. Not fair on someone who may unwittingly buy it.
