Will crossprocessing knacker my chems?

Specifically... if I process some slide film (E6?) in my C41 chemistry, is that chemistry likely to be buggered for all future uses?

I have never cross processed E6 film but from what i've read on other forums it appears that it doesn't do the chems much good .....Perhaps wait until the chems are near the end of their life deving C-41 then soup the E6 film as a last roll.

I'm sure someone much more experienced will come along soon and confirm that what i've just said is a load of carp :D

Other forums? There are other forums?

I see we have the same Caveat

Thanks for the reply Asha

Yep but I'm darned if i can recall which one i read the info re E6/C41.......besides I'm sure the advice can't possibly be as good as on TP......seeing as we have the "elite team" in f&c :D

You should do it as the chemicals become exhausted, or at least the last rolls of a batch of chemicals.

Cheers freecom, I shall resist the urge for another few films yet then :)

No problem. For the same reason, people who specifically order cross-processing at commercial labs should always make it very clear so they know when to process it, otherwise it can ruin a large batch of chemicals (and even worse, C-41 films that are developed after it).

That was my main worry, since I'm only three films into this batch which should do 16 or so, didn't want to ruin the remaining 12 rolls of normal film

could you seporate the chemicals, water em down and do a longer dev?, so you would have a normal dev set, and cross process set :-)

You don't want to do this. That's an even worse outcome - the cross-process will be weak, and even worse the solutions for the conventional C-41 developments will not work properly. C-41 is a standardised process and thus any interfering with the strength of the chemicals is likely to severely underdevelop, underfix and under-bleach your film.

Don't you dilute one of the kits to a re-use working solution? Couldn't you make two working solutions, one clearly labeled c41 and the other for x processing.

I'd guess so if using for example the tetanal C41 kit......make up the working solutions from the concentrates then put some aside (say 3OOml of each chemical ) purely for cross processing.....

You could, although you'd have to have a batch of 12-16 films to cross-process to make that efficient. Since most people don't, and only want to cross-process one or two, it makes more sense to put them at the end of a conventional C-41 batch.
