Will Cobra 700AF flash fry my 500d??

I have just been given one of these flash guns that was on a film canon 500 (step dad gone digital), now the shoe mount works, but a little bit concerned about switching it on and damaging my 500d with it

praps better off selling it and putting funds towards a speedlite is my thinking, but would quite like to have a little play with it if its safe
