Will A Retail CS6 Upgrade Work From CS4?

I'm currently using PS CS4 and am quite happy with it except that I can't open RAF files with it since the RAW converter only works with CS6 or later for this purpose. I've been offered a new retail packaged CD with the CS6 upgrade. Now I know at one point Adobe would only allow an upgrade to CS6 from 5 or 5.5 but I'm not sure if that was just direct from them, an online upgrade restriction or whether a retail CD containing the upgrade would work OK or not. Can anyone please confirm one way or another? I'd rather avoid another monthly payment which is why I'd prefer to go with this option if it's possible.

I'd firmly suggest that you stick with PS CS4 especially if you're running it in a 64-bit environment. It's superbly capable and just misses a few of the later bells & whistles, but so what? Think of raw conversion as a separate preliminary.

Option 1 might be to download & install Adobe's dng converter which can render your raws into a form that cs4 can read. An extra step in the workflow, but it's free!

Option 2 might be to buy Lightroom 5 or 6, & then use PS for things that LR can't do.

Option 3 is that there are other free apps that'll process your raws, and output them as tiffs (say) that cs4 can work on.

It doesn't have to cost a bomb, unless you're under pressure or want to boast about having the latest gear.

Thanks Rog. I currently use the Adobe Converter but reading various articles it doesn't seem to be the best. I'm very happy with CS4 and would prefer to keep it that way, TBH. I've done some testing of Iridient this evening and it looks quite capable and I like some of the slider options which could potentially speed some bits up, too, so might go with that option. I've never get on particularly with LR. I had it installed years ago and moved quickly away from it. I have a copy now which I tried to install a few days ago but there seems to be a problem inputting the license key. Others have had the same problem so goodness knows. The Iridient raw conversion also looks very good and I'm able to set up a lens profile for the X-T1 and the Laowa lens which helps tune things that bit more.

I'd been speaking generally - now I understand your context more ...
