will a 10x macro ring get me close enough?

I wanted to start getting into macro photography without forking out shed loads of cash.
so I've ordered a set of macro rings, just wondered if anyone else has any experience with them and let me know if they are any good?
Guess I shoulda asked the question first... but there you go lol :bonk:
 
i have a set of these, +1, +2, +3 and a +10. Think I paid about £15-20 for them on Ebay for exactly the same reason as you, I wanted to try macro. And to be honest I've only used them about half a dozen times and not seen any great issues with them.

I've just bought a Nifty fifty and intend to try them on this as an alternative to buying a macro lens, also looking at a set of Extension tubes. If i use this setup enough I'll look at buying a dedicated Macro lens
 
It made a difference and certainly got closer but to be honest I didn't find as much difference as I expected. This said however, I was only using a Fuji S5600 at the time.

The impact with a better lens may make a big difference. I'll need to try these on my 50mm soon :)
 
I looked at getting the same type of thing on ebay, probably the same set, to use with my 18-200 lens. Has anyone used these with a 200mm lens?
 
If you want to get seriously close then use one of these.

This shot was taken with it, very shallow DOF though.

I used them a lot and stack them for the closest results. If you have plenty of light, tripod and remote you should get some quite nice results :) CLICKY for some examples of shots I have taken using the closeup lens attatchments :thumbs:

I think there's some confusion with the wording here....it's a +10 diopter and not 10x magnification. ...see below

Maybe look for a quite large fly Trev !

Diopters don't have a specific magnification factor, they apply additional magnification to the lens. 1 diopter (+1) will increase the native mag by 25%. 10 diopters (+10) will increase the native mag by 250%.

You don't say which lens you've order them for but I'll assume the kit lens. The 18-55 has a max native mag of 0.28x at 55mm. Therefore your 10+ diopter will give you 0.7x magnification (0.28 x 2.5)....still only 70% of a true macro lens.
A simple 12mm extension tube would give you 0.81x by reducing the minimum focus distance.

Adding diopters to a lens with a quite high native magnification (a true macro lens like the EF100) can be more beneficial. The native 1:1 would end up as 2.5:1 with the +10 diopter added.

I hope you weren't expecting to see the warts on its tongue.
