Hi, I have just upgraded my camera from a 40d to a 5d mark 2 mainly for my studio photography although i would like to use it for evrything now of course.
I have a sigma 70-300 lens for my 40d for wildlife and want to replace it with a 300mm lens for my 5d, a good lens but not mega expensive or overly heavy. I know its a tall order but just wondered if anyone can give me a recommendation lensewise to fit? thanks :)
 
The only advice that I can offer Dominic, is that you need to be looking at a 400mm plus lens, because the 300mm on a crop sensor was giving you 450mm.
I do not have the funds to buy a bigger lens, but wildlife photography demands it, so you have to decide between more lens or teleconverters.

Yeah good point. I dont think my 300mm will work on my 5d so i will need to replace it, but i have a horrible feeling i will need to buy an expensive lens or use my 40d for wildlife as i was which is not ideal...
 
What sort of wildlife do you have in mind?
I use a 300mm prime on a 40D because it's very handy for just strolling around and shooting what you come across.
This,however,is not the recommended way to tackle the subject,particularly birds.

The Canon 300mm F4L is light, sharp and not overly expensive as good primes go. You can even add a 1.4X teleconverter and still be able to use it on your 40D.
 
Depending on the size of the wildlife you need more length on a 5D2 than a crop, so for birds you would need at least 500, that is why most bird shooters use crops like the 7D. In the wildlife stakes length is king.
 
I use a Canon 300/4L (non-stabilised) prime on crop cameras. It works nicely with a Kenko 1.4x teleconverter and slightly better with a Canon teleconverter.

I picked up my copy of the 300/4L for about £400.00 in very nice condition and they are usually in the range of £400-450.

If you're happy with your Sigma though, I'd recommend just keeping your 40D or getting another crop camera for reach, rather than trying to buy a monster 500mm lens for your 5D.
