Hi,

I've read a little here and Jack Pyke seems to be coming up as a decent option for waterproof and quiet.

I'm not looking to spend a fortune, so sadly I can't go with buy cheap buy twice no matter how good an theory it may be, as things are just now its more buy cheap or buy never :)

Has anyone had much use from this stuff?

I had thought about Army surplus but I wouldn't really know what to go for as I'd probably buy online and fear I'd sound like a packet of cornflakes creating about like a perv through the woodland, now some beasties may think I'm food, so maybe that would work :naughty:

Also any suggestions for covering an albino elephant leg? Erm, I mean a 400mm 5.6! I had seen this suggested.

Also (again!) how do you guys keep your camera dry, I see a bit about clothes in the wet, but whats the point in being dry then all your kits dead?

a simple and cheap way is to buy a pair of green cheap overtrousers and cut the legs off , 2 rubber bands and there you are yours gwh
 
Ive got some jack pyke boots which are good quality. For trousers I use Sherwood Forest Kensington, which is a bit more pricey (about £80) but are near enough silent, and very warm in the winter.
I also use Pinewood trousers which are now hard to find in this country and Fjallraven Forester trousers, which are also very pricey.

Standard Army surplus camo trousers are pretty quiet, but not silent.
I wear all this stuff everyday, not just for hunting/photographing and its all very comfortable and hardwearing.
 
Have a look at Paramo Lasts forever, quiet, green and TOTALLY waterproof.

Those WWS lens covers look nice and a good fit (not too sure about buying overtrousers though as my skills with scissors, well lets just not go there :)), I could well go for those.

Clothes wise I found Paramo a little expensive as do the other ones, I'm also a little unsure about ex-army if only for the noise.

Luckily I've found out that there are a couple of Pykes stockists locally so can take a look.

I have the Jack pyke trousers and jacket.

Used every day last winter. Never got wet inside once.
 
Thats quite a good place, cheaper on eBay though (£90 with jacket, trousers and shirt!)

Once I've tried some on I can see myself getting some, assuming they are okay, which by what Mark said they do sound good.
 
I'm a military surplus fan/user...but it's a minefield trying to get pukka kit rather than knock offs so markyboy's steer is probably best. As for kit 'camo-ing', don't forget the option of a scrim scarf and sniper tape - cheap and effective for lenses, tripod legs, etc.. The sniper tape sticks to itself, not what it's on, if you see what I mean - the Jack Pyke brand stuff works well.
 
Well, so far its a WWS Cover for the 400mm (like the look plus reviewed well if a little expensive), some sniper tape (for tri/monopod) & a beanbag.

I've looked at all the clothing options and almost all are out of my budget and nearly ordered some trousers which weren't waterproof!! Luckily the seller warned me as he knew what I wanted them for and is hopefully coming back with a price on a jacket and trouser combo.
 
Paramo stuff is ok but it wouldn't be my recommendation for static stuff. Mainly because the system uses the pump effect of the analogy liner to prevent water ingress and this in turn requires the wearer to be generating a certain amount of heat.

Part experience has shown me that without this heat the jkt soaks through relatively quickly.

Rubbish. The pump effect is to get rid of water vapour as in sweat, the liner/Nikwax prevents water getting in. So 'static' means no sweat, no wet.
I have been wearing it for years, it works if you are moving, or sat still.

I too have been wearing it for years and this is my experience. Quite frankly I don't care if you disagree, I didn't just decide to sit and make that up.

If you're happy with it fine, but I know the problems I've had with it.

Well we agree to disagree then. NEVER had any problems with it, got a wardrobe full of it, will not wear anything else. (well, a Buffalo 6 mountain shirt when it's REALLY cold!)
 
Great stuff I'm sure, but too expensive for me, but as you mention not wearing anything else, are all these, Paramo, Jack Pyke, Dearhunter etc all over trousers?

No, well, not Paramo. Same as any other layering system, base, middle and outer shell. They do have overtrousers, but I use the Cascada and Fuera trousers, one warm and waterproof, the other wind and showerproof, or they can be worn like ordinary trousers. In summer, worn on their own, in winter with long johns. Depend on the ammount of effort you will be putting in.

Not sure just what your upper limit is but the stealth gear out fits are built to last and are designed for photography in the great out doors. Even Simon King has some of their gear.

Almost bought the Stealth Grear trousers but another user had to return a pair due to poor quality--however i believe they were replaced without issue and the 2n pair were a bit better. I personnally wanted something to keep me warm in the cold winter months sitting in a hide or on a mountain side and the Deerhunter Rusky were the ones for me, just order 1 size bigger though as the padding is thick...:thumbs:

Got the stealth gear trousers and I find them excellent, I was the only warm one during a visit to skye recently. Only problem is I've lost a bit of "pud" recently so they don't really fit properly now.
 
Well in the end I got the Jack Pykes and wrote a little review, nothing fancy but theres not much out there!
 
I was going to buy a Jack Pyke cartridge case for my micro 4/3 system, great quality for the price. Might have to look at the trousers above, look great.
