Hi all

Fancying a 1 night wild camp Brecon Beacons or The Black Mountains area on August.

Never been to the area so wondered if any of you had any useful info..

Looking to do a sunset and sunrise, preferably looking over a lake / reservoir or similar. Not too much of a trek as by no means are we mountaineers

Any good spots known please ?TIA

The Beacons are a national park so you may get moved on if spotted. Haven't been there for years but Langorse lake used to be half decent if I remember rightly. Theres a small lake in the Black mountains that used to have a cracking sunrise and reflection depending on the time of year and wind, it was also a bit off in the wild so you probably wouldn't get disturbed, I'll have to dig out my maps when I get back home though for a name, it had a large rocky escarpment by it if that helps for now.

I'm sure @Big Andy may be able to help.

@blondie606 you might want to look at Llyn Idwal / Llym Ogwen. Was there for sunrise shoot the other month, there where a few wild campers. Its also an easy path/trek from the Carpark less than 1 mile away. They have made a stone pathway up on to the lake Llyn Idwal

Great info guys, thanks a million....will take a look see at some maps for the places mentioned. ...
@posiview ....what say you ?

You won't be able to wild camp at LLangorse although there is a camp site there if you want to splash out. As to wild camping in the Beacons, as said above it's not aloud although it does happen a lot. Provided you keep back from any road no one is going to know you're there, I've done it many times and all over the park. Just leave no evidence and no one seems to care.

By the way Andy, leave the sheep alone they belong to the Welsh. Unless you have any Welsh blood in you that is.:D

Thanks for that @Big Andy , appreciate the info (y)

I remember popping up Pen Y Fan with some of the Loonies on one of their early morning forum meets and there was a couple of wild camp folk up there for a wonderful sunrise. A bonus is if the breakfast caravan is in the car park as well :) .

I've often seen people camped at the top of the Fan, the last few times I've gone up for a sunset I been joined by a park ranger at the top I'm guessing he's checking but then on the way down (in the dark) I'm passing other people on the way up. I'm guessing as long as you dont make a PITA of yourself you'll be left more or less alone

@blondie606 Did you end of going after? Where abouts did you go? Would love to see some of the photos. I'm looking at doing this myself soon. Anyone else would be most welcome to join me if they're interested.

Hi three of us went Lynne @blondie606 mark @Southdowns and me.

Weather was, shall we say, not the best

We camped at a slate mine, the name of which I don't recall. Wonderful view but we needed some nice sunset or sunrise weather.

We also took a trip to South Stack lighthouse.

If you again let us know and we might join you.

cheers

Hi ya
As @posiview said , weather was not on our side but still had an enjoyable trip.
Posted a write up with a mix of phone and camera shots......we stared at Kinder Scout then head down the Llanberis and the slate quarry above Llyn Padarn
Write up has a few photos at the end...

Excellent! Definitely inspiring me to go out now. In fact I'll be going up Pen y Fan after work today.
