Loved his character in real life in the BoB interviews and his character in the show itself (also bits in Stephen Ambrose book if you've read that).

Rip to one of the dwindling numbers of actual legends..

I haven't seen the film, but I have a great deal of respect for anyone who went through that. My grandfather - whom I never met - served on the Western Front through most of WW1, and my father was in the RAF during WW2. He only spoke about the lighter moments, and the period when he met my mother during a posting to South Africa.
