My linksys router is on its last legs and needs replacing and I think I have narrowed down my search to either TP-Link Archer D2 or D5. I read on many forums, then it is better to get a adsl modem and connect the modem to the router, rather than let the modem router do all the work. What is the benefit of this set-up compared to just plugging the modem router straight into the bt phone line?

Simply that you are not trying to do everything in one box. It's a more complex setup though - especially if you want to be able to monitor line stats. No feeling for how good/bad the Archer series of router is, but I use TP Link managed switches at home that don't seem to have missed a beat over the last year or so.

Be wary that the MTU change from 1500 to 1492 can cause certain VoIP applications to no longer function due to restrictions that do not allow fragmented packets. This is probably not relevant to the average user but if you do use any VoIP telephony product then best to check :)
