Hi gang,

I'm going to be moving my PC into a room away from the modem so will need a WiFi adaptor. It's quite an old mobo so only USB 2.0 enabled. Can you recommend a plug and play adaptor, please?

I use a Netgear WN3000RP for WiFi range extension. This will result in your house having two WiFi networks that overlap each other, i.e. MyWiFi Network and MyWiFi Network_EXT

This is a USB WiFi adaptor that I've used in the past. Worked a treat, but depends on how strong your wifi signal is at your new location of course.

One of the walls in our house seems to block WiFi into a particular room. So when we upgraded to fibre-optic broadband, I got a pair of TP-Link AV500 'Ethernet over Mains' adapters. These connect the new Brightbox2 router modem to our old Netgear router which I've configured as a WiFi extender. This approach uses one WiFi network name, but the two routers operate on different channels.

The other thing to consider is using the TP-Link adapters with a network cable, i.e.

Router <---RJ45--- > TP-Link <--- mains ---> TP-Link <---RJ45---> Computer

Several of those words made sense to me. :D

That looks like a nice simple solution that this luddite could handle. :)

As long as you have an Ethernet port at the back of the PC and the wiring in the house is not old this will give a better connection then a USB WiFi plug.

Okay, now I've found the desktop link I can see what that is. The house is 150 years old and I'm not sure how long ago the wiring was changed. Ours had an archaic system, but this new place might be a bit more modern.

Q1. Do you have a mobile phone with WiFi capability?
Q2. If so, do yet get a decent WiFi signal in your new location?

If the answer to Q2 is yes, then just plug a USB wireless adaptor in the back of your PC. I had the Netgear one I listed above, plugged into my PC for years.

Unknown yet. :)

A decent brand Wireless N Adaptor should work out just fine dependent on the distance and make up of your walls from the Access Point. USB 2 won't limit your throughput on a UK internet connection. If you have a newer Wireless Router standard (Wireless AC) then look to purchase a Wireless AC adapter, Their speeds and range are typically faster.
5GHZ networks can be faster than 2.4GHZ, but sometimes cannot penetrate as many walls. I'd stay away from the nano type adapters as the aerial inside them may be smaller.

Old cabling doesn't work so well with the Ethernet over Power type devices. You may also find that your house is split into different rings of power which would b****r such solution.

Cheers. :)

I've found devolo powerline adaptors work well as long as both adaptors are on the same ring main, even in a victorian house with old wiring.
