I lent my camera (Nikon D5000) to the wife during our last holiday and she got on rather well with it. She now fancies her own DSLR that can use the lenses we already have.

Question is, do I get her one of the D3000 or D5000 series or do I give her my D5000 and upgrade to a D5300 or D7100?

I quite like my D5000 and am familiar with it. It's only got 16000 or so clicks and I've not wanted anything more advanced (saying that, I've not tried a D5300 or D7100 so don't know if I am missing anything).

Anyone been in the same position? What would you do?

Many thanks.

Lee

Oh come on.....Most of us would love an excuse like this to upgrade.. Go get a D7100:clap::naughty:

:eek:Wifey?!! Watch out she doesn't want to upgrade you! Anyway, I agree - give your partner the current Nikon and then find yourself another one. You know you want to.

:D
Thanks for all your replies. I get a feeling that you're all trying to tell me something...

Would a 7100 get me that much more in real terms though? Apologies if that seems like a daft question but it would be stretching the budget somewhat. For the same reason of budget, I would like to stick with a cropped sensor rather than full frame so I can use all of the lenses with both bodies.

Thanks for the link Derek but I can't seem to view the page it takes me to ???

Thanks,
Lee

My personal view is that currently the D7000 is a better buy than the D7100, especially on the 2nd hand market.

Whilst the D7100 is a slightly better camera you need very good lenses and technique to get the best out of it - at that pixel density you will be lens limited most of the time. 16mp of the D7000 is more than enough for pretty much anyone and doesn't show up lenses as badly as 24mp does.

probably upgrade, take a look at what extra the upgrade brings, and also what a el cheapo new one doesnt have

Simple ...buy her the D7100 of course!!! You already have a decent camera, after all ..... :exit:

I think your wife would much rather have a new camera than one you don't want any more!

Both very good points but we have discussed it and I think the best way forward would be for me to have a substantial evaluation period with, say, a 7100 to make sure it is the right move ;) The Mrs tells me that this is the right way to go so who am I to argue

Go for the Dx upgrade (D7100?) now then when she finds herself wanting an upgrade, let her have that and get yourself a new body.

I would like to upgrade to D7000, if my wife wanted my camera and I could upgrade I wouldn't hesitate.

Upgrade, get the same make, then when she wants lenses you can give her yours and upgrade those as well

It would only be fair to give her your D5000 for the simple fact that you know it like the back of your hand. If/When she asks questions on it you'll be able to answer them easily and you'll be a hero :p
