Wierd Camera Fault - Canon?

Some of you may have seen my previous post relating to an issue with the compact flash (CF Unit) in my 50D. After initially thinking it was some bizarre problem with the Sandisk cards, I then noticed that a pin was missing from the CF unit inside the camera along with another bent pin.

I have now had the CF unit repaired (2 replacement pins) and the camera work fine with the Prospec (Calumet's own brand) card. However, the Sandisk cards still don't work with the camera, showing the same error 'card not formatted - format card with camera' when I try to do this it says 'cannot format card - change card'.

Canon seem to think that this is a problem with the firmware, so I downloaded the latest version '1.0.8' and saved it to the good CF card (Prospec), but although it appears to begin preparation for installing it it quickly comes up with an error message saying 'firmware file not found, remove battery and try again'.

I have spoken with Calumet, Canon, Canon Service Engineers and Sandisk and they are all at a loss as to what the problem is.

Does anybody have any idea what the issue may be? For info, I have had all the CF unit connections tested and they check out perfectly and like I say, the camera works perfect with the Prospec card.

Many thanks

Just to check, you saved the latest firmware to the root of the CF card ?

What firmware is your body currently running ?

Have you tried the Sandisk card in another body or a card reader - does it work okay ? I'm just wondering if the broken pin is inside the Sandisk card ???

Is the Sandisk an 8Gb Extreme IV by any chance?

Bob

I have a Sandisk card (FAKE) that fits in my 1D III but will not physically fit in my 1D IV

The current version off firmware I am running is 1.0.7. I downloaded the 1.0.8 and saved it in the root of the CF card. It definitely knows that the software is on the card because if you try to update on a blank card it immediately tells you to insert a card with the firmware on. On this card it does make a start to install it but then comes up with the error message about software not being found.

The cards I have been having problems with are all Sandisk Ultra 4GB 30MB/s and I bought them from Jessops. My friend tried the Sandisk card in his Pentax and it worked fine and formatted without any problems.

Cheers

okay so you know the card works in his Pentax and he's formatted it in his camera, have you tried to reformat it in your PC, then trying to format it in the camera again ? and then load the firmware up ?

Yes, that was one of the first thing I did which the manager of Jessops advised but it still didn't work. I honestly don't think its the card that's faulty, I can only think that it's something in the camera apart from the cf unit

I did it myself

Okay, so you can't return it to the repairer for checking.

Have you tried (I seem to think you can, but I'm not 100%) to update the Firmware via USB connection to your PC ?

The only other option I can think of is to see if there is a Canon rep in your local store at any point and see if they can offer any advice ?

Just checked and yes you can update the firmware via EOS Utility and USB cable - might be worth trying it this way ?

I had heard this was possible, but couldn't figure it out. I asked Canon tech support team and they told me that the only instruction they have it to do it by CF.

Hi

When you download the firmware update, extract it and click on the Instructions PDF, approx 1/2way down are instructions on how to do via EOS Utility.

I have tried to update the firmware with the camera connected to the PC using EOS Utility and everything on the PC appears to be going OK. Until a message is shown on the camera screen which says:

"Update file cannot be found. Please check the memory card and reload the battery and try again"

I am getting more and more convinced that there is a more serious issue with the camera.

I purchased a new CF unit from Canon with the intention of replacing the sites unit. But, when I stripped the camera down it was clear that a full replacement would be tricky and very time consuming. For that reason I replaced only 2 pins in the u it which was quite straight forward. After doing this, I visually inspected all connections under magnification and tested them with a meter. For reference I did remember to discharge to capacitor before carrying out the repair

Well, I would think that it's a problem with the repair. If the card is known to work (in another camera) then I would think the issue is with the repaired CF unit.... Maybe there were more than 2 pins damaged?
