Widescreen?

When we all had square TVs they brought out widescreen films and we had 2 chunks of black on the films.

So we all went out and bought big 42" widescreens and now all the films have 2" of black top and bottom!

Whats going on? Im ending up having to zoom the picture to fill the screen which isnt ideal.

Have they started a new format which isnt best on widescreen? Id have done best to keep my square one!!

Real films are often shot in 2.35:1, or even 2.40:1, and so when playing DVD's on your 1.77:1 widescreen TV, you'll still get black bars top and bottom with these. Freeview and SKy both broadcast most channels in 16:9 (i.e. 1.77:1), and so you need to make sure that you've set your digital box to output in widescreen, and you shouldn't then need to zoom on your telly. If you're still using analogue terrestrial, I think the beeb and ITV broadcast in 14:9, in which case you'd technically get black bars left and right.

ive noticed that, i just presumed that "true" widescreen was a bit wider than what our tvs are, either that or the recording itself is compiled in letterbox format so as you say the only way to get rid is to zoom and loose half an inch or so from each side

It's just because our lovely widescreen tellies aren't as wide as the films are made :shrug:

and our widescreen monitors are 16:10

I think they couldn't make CRT TV's the same aspect ratio as Film so they comprimised giving us the black bars. However they could make LCDs / Plasma any shape but they've kept them the same as the CRT's :shrug:

The bit that annoys me is the craze for HD TV's when a huge amount of new TV content is still in the old aspect ratio. So you end up with a stretched blocky image on your expensive hi-tech TV :bang:

Technology advances never cease to amaze me ... ... always something wrong with everything they bring out these days ... :shrug: ... like it's forcing us to buy the next best thing to ideal all of the time ... :razz:

No the tv is definitely set at 16:9 or whatever.

Just that brand new films seem to be made different to that.

technology is such that i believe there is already something in the various R+D labs that will blow HD away, BUT and heres the but..... the companys want us to all switch to HD and line there coffers and then they'll unveil the next big thing and we'll have to line their pockets again

I've heard that aswell something called cinnymatic?? :shrug:

But I heard on tv that its not likely to go past HD? weather they said that when SD digital tv came out?
