I have been using Photoshop Lens distortion filter with fairly good results until I tried this:

This is after the usual perspective correction. Note the tower is still skewed and I can't get it right.

Please let me know what I could try to fix it in software (on MAC).

Try using Edit > Transform> Distort to straighten it up. Just a suggestion.:)

Thanks. I am rather more concerned about the horizontals on the tower...

I use Paul's technique, which I think works better.

If you "Select All ( cmd/ctrl A) the got to Free Transform ( cmd/ctr T), then holding down the cmd/ctrl key, grab on of the conner points and drag the corner to straighten the object. The command/ Control option means that only that point is used. without the command /control option the whole side is moved ( try it and see. ). There are also "warp tools that may help with the tower horizontals.

I'm waiting to see if the lens correction option in CS5 ( and it seems Lightroom 3 release) works any better. ( you'll need ACR release candidate 6.1 for CS5 to get the latest lens correction tools.)

I am resurrecting this thread as I still can't do it properly.

Any objects on the sides with any horizontal elements just look wrong after perspective 'correction' in Lightroom 3.

Thanks.

The Lens correction tool in LR3 is just that lens correction and not a fix for wide angle images with severe perspective distortion caused by the back of the camera not being upright and level (tilted up).

To be honest seeing the original before you altered it would be more useful in making a suggestion.

There is a severe complicated fix but I would be loath to suggest it without seeing the original to see if it can be avoided.

A very very rough try using it but the small image size makes it difficult. Also altered the building on the left as it did not seem right.

(edit) Just noticed you have editing unticked so removed it.

One tip is to put on the grid or guides to give you a straight line to compare it with (view/show/grid) As Paul says I'd use the trasform tool in distot.
Just took the liberty of trying it and it does a fair job, I won't post the result as you have edits unticked but it is easier with a grid.

DxO Optivs Pro has the best tools I've come across for correcting lens distortions. But it ain't cheap. Might be worth downloading the trial though.

I am sorry for a late reply.

I've added original, and allowed editing. Please let me know what could be done with it. I have a few similar files, and will have some more sooner or later.

Thanks.

Thanks, but at that price I might think about 24mm TSE or even 17mm TSE.

Heres a very quick go I just used the transform tool.

Thank you for the effort. I still don't like how the tower is distorted. In real life it is symmetric and looks like this http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1830238

Is there a way to render the tower without such an obvious distortion? It would be very useful to know and apply the method to any similar photos that I may have.

Any good?

I used Wayne's edit as CS4's lens correction was useless on the original.

Edit - Better attempt.
Using transform>skew + warp btw

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

That's exactly what I want.

How exactly did you get there - just skew + warp btw?

The easiest way to avoid distortion is to shoot from further away with a long lens, but thats not alway practical.

I made a rectangle selection covering everything in line with the tower (basically from edge of tower to right edge, top to bottom)
-layer via copy
-Free transform> skew
-raise top left corner slightly
-lower top right corner slightly
-lower bottom right corner slightly
-change to warp
-i used the middle anchor points and just brought them in a touch to make the tower more narrow.
-Used a layer mask to blend in the two layers, had to remove the bottom right shadow portion from new layer to restore original shadow.

All done pretty quickly, im sure on the full rez, it will be better.

This is as close to straight as I could get in a jiffy:

As you can see, using the warp tool means you can pretty much get it to where you want it but you inevitably loose parts of the image that have to be A) cloned back in, or B) you crop to the narrowest points. The horizon on my edit need some work......
