I'm thinking of getting a wide-angle lens for the D3, I've got a Nikon 18-35mm but would like something wider in order to vary the type of shots available and to experiment a bit.
What w/a lens would you think I should consider for this full format camera?
TIA

For Nikon FF?

There's the Nikon 14-24mm, I'm not a Nikon user (any more...) but I've read that it's excellent and there's the Sigma 12-24mm. After that I'm a bit stuck...

The Sigma 12-24 is as wide as it gets on a D3 or any other FX Nikon, so forget about going to 10-11mm (unless you mean 10-11mm equivalent on DX...)

Thanks both, Sigma looks much more attractively priced option :D - anyone any experience with it?

14-24mm is about as good as it gets unless you want to shell out crazy money for the exotics like the 13mm or the 6mm. Only trouble is the filter system for the 14-24mm is about £300. The 16-35mm might be a good lens to look at.

The Sigma 14mm f/2.8. I've got it and I like it very much!

Yup, 12mm on Fx is almost insanely wide. Hardly distorts at all (apart from the inevitable convergeance of verticals. IF I could afford to, I would go for the Nikon 14-24 and ignore the missing 2mm at the short end. If I want anything wider, I use a Sigma 8mm fisheye.

Only on my APS-C 20D, it's my most used zoom.

I've played with it on my 35mm SLR but as I'm done with film I haven't shot with it but just looking through it tempts me to go full frame.

Great lens - currently on my D2x bit will stay with me when I finally manage to go FX. Sharp as a tack and dirt cheap....

I have got the sigma 12-24 and found it to be ok.

I will keep it until I can afford the Nikon 12-24

Another vote for the Nikon, if price is not an issue the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 is the best WA lens.

If you want to save some money then I have read the Tokina AF 16-28mm f/2.8 is nearly as good.
