Wide angle on DX - worth it?

No
I have been thinking about a wide angle lens in my D90, but the crop factor really is bugging me. If I went for an 12-24 I would really have 19-38 which I do t consider wide at all.

Any thoughts?

you have obviously never seen 12mm on a crop then! most certainly very wide and if thats not enough for you why not consider the Sigma 10-20mm?

No I haven't.

I was comparing 2 50mm primes one on my camera and the other on a full frame - I'm missing so much!

there is a big difference in FOV but at the wide end I dont think the 10mm you would get from the Sigma (15mm FoV) would be vastly different to the 14mm you could get from something like the Nikon 14-24mm on FF. Distortion would however be greater.

As for your 50mm, have you tried any of the 35mm lenses (f1.8 or f2)? I could not get on with the 50mm and only used it around 10 times for the year or so I had it. Swapped to the 35mm and it's never off my camera. Cracking lens!

The Sigma 10-20 is one of my favourite lenses, I'll be sad to see it goes when I finally sell up my DX and get another D700. Well worth getting.

Haven't tried it but might give it a go. I like the idea of the prime, but when the camera goes to my eye it's too close to the subject. Thanks the the advice.

Totally :agree:

I had a Nikon 12-24 for a few years and swapped it for a more Wedding friendly 17-55, which I also use extensively for landscapes etc. Its not that often that 17mm (about 25mm in FX terms) isn't wide enough, but I NEVER found that 12mm wasn't wide enough

Funnily enough now, for the odd drama I am looking to buy a 10-20 later this year which is wider than a very wide thing :D

An extreme wideangle on FX is the Nikon 14-24 and the 10-20 in FX terms becomes a 15-30, so as near as damn it the same

For ridiculous wide  choose a 10.5mm fisheye like this one I took a few days ago :)

I wish people would stop putting fisheye shots up.... I HAVE NO MONEY, YOU HEARING ME :D

swapping mine was the best thing I have ever done kit wise... my photography came on leaps and bounds when I made the switch!

Just need a few more posts and I'll hit the trade section.

50mm 1.8 soon for sale....

DD,I like that pic a lot!

The 10-20 is awesome! Some of my best (to me) landscape shots with that lens on the old D300, it does amazing things to skies and you can get your own feet in the picture if you're not careful. Ace lens

Barry G, 12mm is wide. Thing that people are forgetting is that on FF (35mm) a 24mm lens was considered wide without creating silly distortions. I can remember getting my hands on a 20mm lens and thinking that I'd hit the jackpot!!! :)

Wider than 10/11mm you'll be looking at fisheye lenses, which are fun but not as flexible as a corrected wide angle. The 12-24 you've mentioned is in my kit bag and although I'm now looking to upgrade to a 14mm prime, it's such a flexible lens that anyone who's looking for a very sharp UWA zoom for Nikon wouldn't go far wrong with that. The Tokina 12-24,mm f/4 is good also, as is the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and a lot of people on here like the Siggy 10-20mm.

One thing yuo'll find with these really wide lenses is the minimum focus distance may only be 30cm or so, but because of the FOV, sometimes that can seem like not enough, especially with small foreground subjects.

These are a few example of the 12-24mm f/4 I use (all at 12mm):

....and this is a 10.5mm fisheye just to give you an idea of what you're getting into if you go that route!! :)
