I am considering buying a wide angle lens I am just wondering how much of a improvement it would make over my 18-55mm kit lens for landscapes?

Any advice?

depends how wide you are thinking of going. The popular choice is the Sigma 10-20 which works if you want wide open landscapes, but you have to remember that it will push things away from the camera, so that nice church on the horizon becomes an almost indistinguishable speck in the shot. I find for most landscape shots, my 18-70 is the better option over my 10-20. A wider angle works better for closer stuff like architecture, or 'nearby' landscape....for instance, a good wide view of the beach while you are actually on it. You can also use it for some good effects....see forbiddenbikers lighthouse shots from dungeness or the 'up close and personal' thread currently on the front page ;)

I currently own the Sigma 17-70 which is a decent option, definitely better than a kit lens.... I've just ordered the Sigma 10-20 however as I'm quite often finding 17mm is just not wide enough - as Ladylens mentions though the wider the lens the further away things get so you need to be increasingly careful about subject choice.

If you need very wide the 10-20 is a good choice, hope so anyway as mine arrives tomorrow !!

I love my Sigma 10-20mm but remember i had to keep my 300d just for this lens,
althought it does fit on the 5D, its not very good ie vinnett hard in the corners.
thought Sigma would have bought out a full frame one by now?

I agree entirely. I love my Canon 10-22, but generally not for landscapes. It's just too wide.

Same with me. I have the sigma 10-20 and found it fun at 1st but now my nikon 18-70 lens is used most of the time. The other lens I would check out is the 24mm wide angle prime. Cracking money for a great lens:thumbs:
