Hi Guys

Your thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated please -

I bought myself a rather nice Canon 17-40mm L from here a short while ago. It is nothing short of excellent BUT as I use a crop sensor (7D) it really isn't wide enough and I need to sort something else :'(

I'm not really sure what to go for as regards quality/cost/performance etc.

Over to you folks :)

10-22 for me too.
I had one a few years back before going Full Frame - and couldn't praise it enough.

I use the Sigma 10-20 mm for shooting the night sky and its spot on

I've just bought a Sigma 8-16mm to replace my 17-40L on my crop sensor camera.

I had the Siggy 10-20 before the 17-40 and was quite pleased with it. I'd happily go for another but just wanted to see what else was suitable. I have given the Canon 10-22 some thought & think this may be the one I'll go for but now there is the Tokina 11-16 to think about

Cheers folks

I think the 8mm side will be a little too wide for me. Be nice to check it out though :)

Funny you say that because I'm thinking the same. I've got my 17-40L up for sale but am currently waiting until I can test the 8-16 before I let the 17-40 go.

I use a siggy 10-20 on a crop DSLR and find it plenty wide enough for landscapes, quirky shots etc.

I also use the Sigma 10-20mm - lovely lens

Im only in Taunton, if you fancy having some Hands On experience of this lens

Les

Thanks for all the replies guys. It seems many of you love the Siggy so I'm tempted to go back to one of them. Reviews for all the lens mentioned give good and bad points. The Siggy soft at the edges/Tokina flare & CA etc. I'd still like to try the Canon so will make a decision after that methinks.

Thanks again everyone :)

If you can afford the Canon 10-22 then get that. If you can't afford then save up a bit and get it. If you really can't afford it then get the Sigma 10-20. Unless you're only shooting stars and/or dark interiors where tripods or flash are not allowed - in which case get the Tokina 11-16.

I own both the Tokina and the Canon. Unfortunately, the Tokina flares horribly when used outside in the daylight, otherwise I'd be able to sell the Canon.

Just bought the canon 10-22mm after being persuaded that whilst the 17-40mm is a lovely bit of glass its not wide enough. Had it for just over a week now and its produced some great shots already. Really liking the 10mm option.

+ 1 for the canon 10-22mm

Stunning shots Nick - love em. I'm not saying it suffers with soft edges - it was purely some of the reviews.

Yes the Canon is a tad pricey but I will sell the 17-40mm so that will get me part of the way if I go for it.

Ho Hum - decisions decisions

Get the Canon.

When I was looking at UWAs there was a guy on here who bought the sigma, it was horribly soft down the left hand side, easily visible from the pictures he posted. The lens was exchanged for another, which had identical softness down the right side..

I remember reading that some people reckoned the non constant sigma was "better" than the f3.5.

I did seriously think about the Tokina 11-16, but felt it was let down by the limited focal range.

I bought the Canon and haven't regretted it.

Those shots were just to put your mind at ease regarding the comments about sharpness, I've not had any issues with mine, I suppose all 3 have their strengths and weaknesses :-) you'll probably love whichever you one you get!

Cheers again guys. I think I'll see if I can stretch to the Canon :)

Tokina 11-16 is superb. build quality superb. love manual/auto switch on Tokina. optically top notch too.
