I am looking for a wide angle lens for my cannon eos 500d. Anyone got any suggestions??
 
How wide and what sort of price range?

I used the sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 extensively on my 20D and always found it excellent for the price!!
 
Those often used are the Canon EF-S 10-22 and the Sigma 10-20. Your choices do depend on price though, so you'd be better adding a budget into the mix as well.

:agree: These are the best wide angle for cropped sensor cameras..
 
I have the 10-20 sigma on my D300 and it's a great lens. Can be picked up mint used for just under £300.
 
I've tried a friends Sigma 10-20 on my 550d and it's a great piece of kit. Have had the opportunity to try out the canon tho
 
No love for Tamron's 10-24? I like mine quite a bit actually - though that is on a Nikon body

17mm is wide, yes, but shooting at 10mm is just a whole new experience. Very tricky to control and master (I never quite learnt to use it properly). A couple of samples:

Whats your budget? If you want an ultra wide (ie 10mm +) they are quite expensive new (between £400 - £700 roughly). 2nd hand obviously cheaper!

Except for the Tokina 11-16.

As for the Sigma, I've not played with the new f3.5 version, but the old f4-5.6 was not very good at all - it just couldn't get right and left sides of an image sharp at the same time.

I currently own both the Canon and the Tokina. The Canon is the best UWA for use outdoors. Its ability to take flare-free photos is quite unbelievable. and with an UWA lens you'll have the Sun in, or near, your frame a lot.

the Tokina, on the other hand, is quite poor at handling flare. But the f2.8 is very useful for dark interiors where flash isn't allowed (museums and churches) and for wide-fiels astrophotography.
 
I have the Sigma 10-20mm 3.5 on my 450D and I love it. wide open for landscapes and architecture it is brilliant. Its a bit of a lump and 82mm filter thread but a must have.
 
Another vote for the Tamron 10-24 here!! I tried it against the Sigma and preferred the Tamron, optical and build quality seemed pretty identical to me.

I didn't consider the Canon EF-S 10-22 on the grounds that it is almost double the cost and this lens would be the least used one in my bag.
 
I have the 500D and a Canon 10-22mm. Its an awesome lens and captures so so much. N cheap but for landscapes etc its immense.

Yu can only use it on a cropped camera though so if you are thinking of going full frame |I would suggest the 17-40 L. If you plan on sticking with the 500D for a while then the 10-22 is amazing
