Wide angle lens

Hey all,

hope you are all well...
Just would like your expert opinion on some lens.
From my reading on here there are a few Wide Angle lens worth looking at:

Tonkina 11-16 ~£450
Cannon 10-22 ~ £599
Sigma 10-20 ~ £400
Sigma 8-16 ~ £699

Any others?
Which of the above is a lens you use / recommend? I have a 500d and quite new to this but really getting into it!I tend to take travel shots so will be great to use one of the above...
My wife has kindly asked that i give her a Xmas list and i've been lookin at these a while (she said include wide angle lens!!!), i think shes in for a shock when see sees the price!!! lol

Of the above lens can you guys advice of key differences that as a novice i would see/ feel. Also is there a worth while difference between the 2 and 10 range?

Finally, taking the cost into account which one would you go for....

I've used the Canon on both a 450D and 550D and got good results. I'd be interested to see other folks comments on the Sigma 10-20.
 
I have used the Sigma 10-20 on a Nikon D200 and D90 (and D700, but not good!)

Was fine for my needs, very very wide. I'd be concerned the 8-16 would be too wide and quite fishy, not so good for landscapes.
The 10-22 is a big old b****r and is quite weighty. Focusing was quiet and quick though.

You's get a second hand one quite a bit cheaper I expect.

im thinking sigma 10 - 20.... but i cant decide.
as a novice not sure i would pick up i the minor points of difference between them all
 
When I was looking for a cropped lens I tried the sigma 10-20 and it appeared to be very soft in the corners and had terrible CA.

I settled on the Tokina 12-24 because it was a lot better in the corners and the CA was a lot better, but not brilliant. The 12-24 Tokina is quite a bit cheaper than the 11-16 Tokina with a better zoom range, although the sharpness drops a bit when you go over 20mm.

im a novice... as you can tell

im so confused now with the choice!!
 
i have a Tonkina 11-16 that i use with my D300s.

It was bought as a compromise on price/performace as a good FX lens was out my price range. For the money, i have been very happy with it - pleasantly surprised to be honest.:thumbs:

I just went through exactly what you're doing now and ended up with the Canon 10-22mm for the following reasons:

1. Better reviews
2. Better resale value.
3. Sigma are great lenses (I've got the 17-70mm) but you keep hearing about "the soft ones".
4. Kerso does it for £515!! :)

No 4 finally did it for me and it's a brilliant lens! Just put a couple of shots on here in the last few days if you want to check them out.

The glencourse pic looks great!
i guess if i can get a good deal on the cannon then that would be a great choice- I just thought the sigma was good value.

What do you mean by "soft ones"?

Slightly out of focus/blurred and some folk have had to return/exchange them. Saying that, I love my Sigma 17-70 OS and it takes really sharp shots. I also agree the Sigma is great value and some people swear by them. You also get a decent lens hood and case free with the Sigma - but you only get a carboard box with the Canon..:lol:

Good luck with your choice....either way they're great lenses.

Read the article in my thread 'to go wide or to go L' a few posts below this one. V interesting. Maybe wide is not the best choice for a novice, unless your willing to put some time into it. I base this on assuming novice = someone not fully comofrtable with all manual settings (ISO, f/stop, shutter speed etc).
 
shabba thanks for the head up... but im more keen now on a wide angle!

Im a novice but feel comfortable with the manual setting - im just not like some of you guys on here - pros and great photographers!

Just go for it Tesh! I'm a novice and was a bit scared too after reading a lot of the 'it's a specialised lens' reports. Just got to watch your angles in the viewfinder really. Best way to learn is by making mistakes!

I had the Sigma 10-20 and loved it (why i sold it i really don't know), but if i was to get another superwide it would be the Tokina 11-16, purely on reputation

It's been almost my walkaround lens since I've had it. It makes everything look clean and crisp.

I know some folks have different opinions of Ken Rockwell, but he gave this lens a rave review and he's a Nikon guy.
