Hi All,

Basically i'm looking into a wide angle lens thats best value for money, maximum around the £700 mark. My camera body is the Canon 7D, so down the Canon, Sigma or Tamron route.

What would you recommend?

Cheers,
Chris

With that budget I think you can get the EF-S 10-22 from Kerso.

I have the Canon 10-22 and love it. I have no experience of the Sigma or Tamron but they are both regarded highly on this forum also.

Have to put in a suggestion of a Tokina 12-24mm got mine of Kerso, stunningly sharp and excellent build quality around 400 quid

Canon 10-22 £585 delivered here

I have the Sigma 10-20 and it's grand, although I did have a go with Parkmoy's Tokina 11-16 last weekend. Felt it was sharper and a tiny bit better built, but missed the extra 4mm of the Sigma.

PS: Welcome to TP!

I have a canon 10-22mm I think is an amazing lens for architectue and lanscape. price is nomally around £500

Sigma have a couple of 10-20mm models, the F4-5.6 (I think) and the newer F3.5

If you're going to want a wider, and constant, aperture, the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 might be worth a look. It's about £600 if I recall correctly. I'm seriously considering it!

I agree about the canon 10-22 for a crop camera-it's a good lens.

The only drawback is if you change to a full frame DSLR (like the 5D), then because the 10-22 is an EF-S lens, it becomes redundant.

If the OP goes for something like a 16-35mm in preparation for a full frame body later on, it's not going to be as dramatic at the wide end as the EF-S ultra wide lenses...

It's a fairly big decision you need to make!
Do you plan to go full frame in the future?

If yes: can you afford to buy an EF-S ultra wide angle lens now and sell it later in favour of an EF mount UWA lens?

If no: go for the EF-S mount UWA, problem basically solved :)

My guess is if the guy has just got a 7D then he isn't looking at full frame just yet. My advice, as always, would be for the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 cos it is a beast.

The Sigma 12-24mm works on APS-C and FF.

This.

I have the Tokina and you just can't beat it. Sharpest zoom I have and amazing build quality,

Another vote for the Tokina 11-16.
I regret selling mine even though I used it once a month.
Stunning lens and 2.8 to boot.

Thanks folks! Plenty of options now, ones that I didn't even think to consider.

I've got a list to look into a review further and test them individually, if I don't like them, send them back.

Cheers!

The new Sigma got quite a goot review in Digital Photography this month if you are after a wider aperture than the old version..

tokina 11-16 from what I've read
f2.8 too :)
and then the canon for 100 notes on play.com!!!

Well, i've ordered one on my CC, now to see if they honour the price :)

A friend of mine picked up a 32GB iPod touch brand new from amazon recently after a pricing error - something like £40? They stuck by it!

I hired the Canon 10-22mm last summer, and I loved it. I've been looking into getting the Sigma 10-20 F3.5 if I can afford it, but if this £100 Canon goes well, i'm sorted

I read a report very recently on the Tamron 12-24.

It was refered to as a little 'soft.'

Canon 10-22, probably the best wide angle you can get.
I use mine all the time for scenery and around town.

I have the 16-35, and once you have it you will struggle to find a nicer lens

another vote for the canon 10-22 , rented it for holiday and loved it :D

I'm also after a wide angle zoom for my Canon 40D. I do like to use Cokin P filters and gather some of those discussed above are not able to take filters.

Current favourite is the Sigma 10-20, but if I can find the Canon 10-22 at the right price I may be tempted. Is it worth the extra over the Sigma though?

There is a 99 quid deal for Canon one on play.com

But they might cancel the orders if they spot it.

Its now back on at its their usual price of £869!

Another vote for the Canon 10-22, I've got one and its the best lens I have ever used, period - the IQ is astounding. Play's (usual!) price is a bit steep, they can be had for between £550 and the above.

I'd be interested to hear if Play.com honor what was clearly a pricing error. If they do its the buy if the century!

I have used my friends 10-22mm and I loved it. Now I have no access to it anymore, so in a similar situation as you. I am trying to find a used Zeiss ZF 18mm or Tokina 17mm as a temporary solution. But then I like alternative glass:)

Depends what you mean by wide angle. I have the canon 10-22mm and yes its a quirky lens, find its better for inner cityscapes, than landscapes unless you like the fisheye effect the lens creates. Actually the lens is best at the 10-15mm focus range, but this lens is rarely on my camera and a lot of money for something that gets used now and again. The sigma 10-20, another lens that on par with the canon, the tokina 11-16 or tokina 12-24 also have great reviews and are slightly less on the wallet, but personally I would look at an al round lens like the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 still gives you the wide angle capability, but also a great walk around lens as well. Another option is the 17-40mm f4 L or as suggested above the 16-35mm f2.8 L if you don't want to go down the EF-S path.
