Wide angle lens options for Nikon full frame?

I'm thinking of a wide angle lens for my D610 and after looking into it on websites, it seems a bit of a minefield.

I don't mind buying used to save money, as it will only be used periodically.

I'd just like a well rated, sharp lens with a small zoom range being preferable. Ideally, it'll be around £500 second hand?
 
With that budget you might be limited to a prime. I was in the same boat when I moved to FX and went for the little 20mm f2.8 AF-D. Superb little thing, but no zoom.

I'm no expert on the subject, but that budget might limit you to the old 18-35 if you want zoom capability.
 
The old Nikon 18-35mm for around £200 and even the new one can be had under your budget. Tamron 17-35mm is decent as well, Sigma 12-24mm is excellent if you get a good copy and is stupidly wide.

if you want to go really cheap... have a look at the tokina 19-35. not a professional lens but for only periodic use could be an option? they tend to go on ebay for around £100 although london camera exchange has one at the guildford branch ( they deliver) for £150 with a 6 month warentee......
 
Tokina 16-28 f2.8 is excellent but doesn't take filters, also look at the Tokina 17-35 f4 too, not tried the latter but own the former. Also as Gary said both versions of the nikon 18-35 are worth looking at.
 
As Gary's said above, the Sigma 12-24 is probably the best option and should be under budget. It's crazy wide on FF at 12mm but very well corrected as far as distortion goes. The exaggerated perspective is due to the laws of physics and so inevitable, although the convergence can be "corrected" in PP. If 19mm is wide enough, the Cosina/Vivitar/?others? 19-35 isn't too bad but does distort significantly all through its range. Not quite fisheye distortion but not likely to give many straight lines!
 
The Sigma 12-24 can be surprisingly good if you can find a decent copy, I've had three over the last few years, one was great, one OK and one I returned. If you would consider primes then take a look at the Sigma 14mm f/2.8, its not made anymore but you can still find them around second hand. I picked one up for £300 from London Camera Exchange in reading, usable in the centre from 2.8 and pretty sharp from f/4. Example below was ISO3200, F4.

There's also the Nikon 14mm 2.8 if you can find one. When they pop up on ebay they're often around £500. Super lens. There are also the Nikon 2.8 zooms, 20-35 and 17-35 to consider if you can find one under budget.
 
Thanks for all the replies. I certainly have a few to choose from there so will get reading some reviews to narrow down the most suitable lens.

I had a quick look at 12-24 sample images and they do look rather distorted, so I'm unsure how well these would correct in post without zooming in too much and losing the sides of the frame.
 
The Distortion is due to not shooting horizontal and EVERY UWA lens suffers from this, as said it's the laws of physics and not the lens.

I had a 18-35 and it was sharp unsought for me but had some difficult to correct distortion which is why I eventually got a 16-35. The 18-35 is great value for money though.
 
The Nikon 20-35mm f2.8 should be within your price range and it's underrated imho :D
 
I've read reviews, watched reviews... Now I'm even more confused lol.
