Wide angle lens (nikon fit)

I have a Sigma 10-20mm which I managed to get for just under £200 through the classifieds on here.
Another lens that a lot of people like is the Tokina 11-16mm but I have never used one.

So FX then. The above suggestions are crop lenses.

I would recommend the Cosina/Vivitar/Tamron/Tokina 19-35mm. They can be picked up for anywhere between £40 and £80. They're optically sound at f8-f11 and will all AF on your body.

Just literally about to ask the same thing. I was thinking a cosina 19-35mm or also saw a tokina 19-35mm but was wondering if anything else will create far better results. How wide you looking? Does it need to zoom or would a 20mm nikon prime do you?

You haven't really said how wide and for what purpose, whether you want zoom or prime. At £200 you aren't likely to get anything that is pin sharp wide open but it's also how fast do you need it to be. You will of course get varying opinions based on peoples experiences but if you were a little flexible on your budget you might want to look at Nikon 20mm f2.8D, 24mm f2.8D, Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4 (mine was excellent but some people have had them soft - read the reviews), Sigma 12-24 (a bit slow but depends on planned use). I found the Sigma 14mm f2.8 to be great but distorts rather a lot. The older Nikon 20-35 f2.8D zoom was a pro lens, usually found well battered but bloody excellent. Might give you some ideas.

If you're as lucky as I was, you might find a Sigma 8mm for that budget but that's a fisheye so probably too wide! The widest zoom that covers FF Nikons is the 12-24 Sigma and again, you might find one within your budget. There are a few 14mm primes around, the Samyang is MF but the Nikon version has auto aperture. The Cosina/Vivitar et al. 19-35 is the budget choice and is wide enough for most uses - and sharp enough at f/8-11. Distorts a fair bit at 19mm though. If 15mm would be wide enough, using the D700 in Dx mode would allow the Sigma 10-20 to be used but that would drastically reduce the possible print size.

I used the cosina today for thw first time. Not too bad.. wee bit of flare at times. But great when stopped down to f8

I used a Sigma 20mm f1.8 prime on a D700 for along time and was always very impressed with it, particularly stopped down from f2.8.

if you need it for a short while you could hire a super good wide angle nikon?
