Im about to purchase my first wide angle lens.
I have looked at the Sigma 10-22mm f/4-5.6, which seems great value.
Is the Sigma 10-22mm f/3.5 really worth the extra dosh?
Any other options at this price.
I will be using the lens in conjunction with my Canon 40D.
I don't really want to spend more than £450.00 as I will need to get UV filter and Polarizer.
I am primarily looking to use the lens to take images of historical buildings and to try and do a bit more creative work.

Any advice or tips please.
Thanks

Presume you mean 10-20mm

Stick with the older f/4-5.6. Its supposed to be sharper than the newer one. Who shoots a 10-20 at f/3.5 anyway?

The Canon 10-22 has the least distortion off all the ultra wide angles I believe, so it might be worth spending the extra on that rather than the filters if historical buildings are your main subject.

You don't 'need' a UV filter per se, I have them and use them according to the situation. Polarisers aren't that great on ultra wide angle lenses due to the angle of view.

If you insist on filters, I use the Hoya Pro 1 which has the LPF (Low Profile Frame) pretty much essential for the widest angles.

Is the 3.5 worth the extra money - imho absolutely. Its a completely different optics array and just works better, faster and sharper. My most favourite lens in the bag and used a lot until I broke it :'(

Personally I wouldn't bother with a polariser as I could never get them to work properly, especially around the edges due the the lens looking through a thicker section of it.

As for anything else to look at - never tried one but the Tokina is supposed to be quite good. You will also be in the realms of a used Canon 10-22 with that budget. At the end of the day it is most important to get hands on with these lenses. My first Sigma UWA I looked at 3 and did a comparison with a Canon and it was the sharpest in the corners. Steer clear of the Tampon offering.

Yes sorry the 10-20mm and it had crossed my mind when I would shoot at f/3.5.

I've got the 4-5.6, got it for christmas least year.

Love the lens, my most used. Never felt I needed a wider aperture with it either as I mostly use it in the daytime, outside.

Buy Tokina 11-16, best for cropped sensors, can be picked used less than £400..

Having been through the same thought process as you, I ended up with the Tokina. It immediately became my favourite lens by a country mile and didn't come off my camera once during a three-week tour of the East Coast in the US. Fantastic lens.

^^ thats all well and good until after you purchase said Tokina 11-16 then realise the Canon 10-22 is by far the best UWA made for ANY dslr.

I was considering the Tokina 11-16 and Canon 10-22 but couldn't justify spending so much, so I'm looking for a Sigma 10-20. Gets good enough reviews!

The canon 10-22 can be had on the classifieds here on TP for around £450ish. Very sharp with little distortion.

Thanyou everyone for your advice it's funny that if you go onto the magazine reviews they to have different opinions, but all very interesting.
At the moment it's a toss up between the Tokina or the Sigma f/3.5, Ive upped the budget to £500.00 ish!

I picked mine up for near that price(£480 with lens hood) from MPB so its not that hard to track down. I'm guessing the big savings are down to the new price being inflated by earthquake shortages recently?

I think the problem is that your not really compairing like with like alot of the time given the different appatures on offer.

Have you considered the Sigma 8-16mm? I've got one, and love it. 8mm is absolutely incredible - you can have a lot of fun with it.

Agree - and I own both lenses.

:plusone: tokina 11-16

For some reason I just want to get it all in ;)

So why did you go for the narrowest of the UWAs? And, yes, there is a difference between 10 and 11mm.

Well Ive just brought the Sigma 10-20 f4/5.6, thanks for all your advice .
Went down the local dealer tried a few lenses on my camera and this one for me felt the best, good reviews and very sharp and a three year warranty from Sigma.
