Hi, ive just bought a Nikon D80 and love it. I want to get into wide angle landscapes and need to buy a lens. Would any of you recommend any particular lens. Also i am a student and on a budget. Thanks.:)

I DON'T agree. I think it's often too wide for landscapes. You have this huge foreground that you have to fill, so you end up with a contrived composition that has something - anything! - in the foreground, and it's all just so clichéd. Ask yoursself how many landscape photos you've seen with a gratuitous pile of rocks, or a gate post, or something, in the foreground, and how many times that really added to the picture.

I'd suggest sticking with your kit lens for now. 18mm is decently wide, and when you find that you've outgrown the compositional possibilities - which will take longer than you think - then it's time to move on. But not before.

I agree with Stewart.

I reckon 17mm to 18mm is about as much as you'll need go certainly for landscape.

An ultra wide angle is useful, but you need a VERY strong foreground, a nice middle distance subject, and also a strong horizon, otherwise you can end up with a lot of nothing.

Its not just about fitting in as much as possible.

Hi. thanks for your comments. i bought the camera body and lens seperate so i dont have the 18mm kit lens. i have been recommened the Sigma 12-24mm ASPHERICAL lens. how does it compare to the 10-20mm. Also i am looking to buy second hand to save money. if any of you know of anywhere i could buy one from it would be most appreciated :) thanks
