Hi guys,

I'll be on top of a mountain soon and I was wondering which lens would best capture the entire landscape?

Is it true that only the 5D takes wide angle shots? I'm reading contradictive info elsewhere. Bit confused here :help:

As above Canon do a 10-22mm wide angle lens which as had very good reviews as being a very sharp lens.

Myself i'm happy with just my 15-85mm any wider i'm not sure i might have problems with my lee filter system, If i need any wider i use a tripod, photostitch and photoshop for a panorama.

I just bought a Sigma 8-16 and it is super wide on a crop without being fisheye

That 2mm at the wide end over the Canon makes a significant difference

Need to be careful as it does not take filters, but I would not expect to use it as a walkaround

Generally very good reviews but many people do seem to go for the Canon 10-22 due to the filter point

If you can, you should try to test both to see if you want/need the extra width

Sigma 10-20 for around £300 or the canon 10 -20 for around £400 second hand will do you right mate
+1

The Canon is the best all-rounder, but you pay a premium for it. The Sigma 10-20 is a very good substitute at a very good price. The Sigma also comes with the hood and soft case, making it even better value.

No, it's not true.

These days you can get an APS-C zoom that starts at 8mm which equates to 12.8mm on a 5D. The widest non fisheye zoom lens that's widely available at a reasonable price starts at 12mm (I think...) so there's next to nothing in it for width between APS-C and FF these days, IMVHO.

There are several lenses in the 10-20mm range available from Canon, Sigma, and Tamron. I had the Canon and wasn't too impressed as I thought it displayed relatively too much distortion and vignetting.

Wide angle lenses are perhaps the most challenging to use well and they can be amongst the most creative but these days an alternative could be to shoot a series of images and stitch them together to make a panoramic image.

There's the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 to consider too but personally I like panoramic photographs so I would shoot a series of shots usually 4-6 and stitch them in photoshop as mentioned above but I tend to do them hand held rather than using a tripod.
