After getting a wide angel lens to complement my current set up. Any ideas o. What we would be a good first purchase. Ideally budget no more than £250 really. Using a canon 60d body. This month digital slr suggest either sigma 10-20 or the tamron 10-24. But doesn't give any reasons or pros con over each or any info

Hi Simon

I've the Sigma 10-20mm and am very pleased with my copy, I've not used the Tamron, but would suggest if there was anyway of you trying one out then do so.

If you look at the flickr account below, I took these photos with the Sigma 10-20mm for my mate who's a joiner - gives you an idea.

Oh, and if you do get one - mind your feet - you'll get them in the shot

I had a Tokina 11-16 when 7D was my main camera. Fab lens. Unfortunately, even pre-owned, I think they'll be a little above £250.

Well Canon's own EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM really does take some beating

Thanks for the help, just looked in this months photo plus and another option seems to be save for a tokina 12-28, seems the reviews in there was quitre good, but wasnt compared to the canon 10-22 for some reason.. gives me something to think about..

I own the Canon 10-22 and the Tokina 11-16 and I have access to a Sigma 10-20.

If you can afford it get the Canon. If you can't afford it, try really hard to afford it. If it really is impossible then get the Sigma. Unless you want the lens for astrophotography, then get the Tokina.

I would like to have one of these lenses. I would also like to have the 15-85 lens too. The latter is a priority. Is it worth it to have both? £500 seems a lot of dosh for an extra 5mm of width.

The 15-85mm and the 10-22mm are very different lenses. The 15-85 covers the range from wide to short telephoto and is a good choice as a walk around lens, if you're comfortable with the modest aperture. The 10-22mm is an ultra wide, invaluable for its intended applications, but less versatile. The 5mm difference at the short end makes an enormous amount of difference to the field of view.

Try to find a dealer with both lenses in stock, compare them on a crop body and decide which would be more useful for you.

I suggest you ignore mag's advice for the better. 10-24 is quite surprisingly soft, and sigma is not much better. Tokina 11-16 and canon 10-22 should be the ones on your list

P.S. You do know that they are NOT get everything in the frame lenses? Search Ken rockwell if you don't (he's got a nice explanation there)

Sell stuff to up your budget and pick up a used canon 10-22. It really is a very impressive lens.

I was a little skeptical reading reviews but I'm very pleased with it

Hi I am not 100% sure If its in your budget but my copy of the sigma 10-20 3.5 is very sharp and I believe is sharper than the original. Mike
