Hi Guys,

I've recently started out in photography and was wondering if anyone can recommend a wide angle lens to start off with? Perhaps a medium run of the mill, not too expensive but not lacking in quality?

Thanks!

Ben

depends what you mean by wide, on a crop body nything around 17-18mm is wide so if your on a budget the kit lens will do fine as a wide angle. If you mean super wide then the best budget option is probably still Sigma's 10-20.

this is not going to help your pocket but i went straight for the cannon10/22mm and wow what a lens hardly ever off my camera

+1 for the Sigma 10-20mm

I had the Sigma 10-20mm and now have the Canon 10-22mm. The Sigma is good... if you get a good copy. The Canon 10-22 is better, but not by much. There wasn't too much difference in sharpness but the colour/contrast and distortion control is better on the Canon, build wise they are both solid just comes down to personal preferance (if you like th EX coating on the Sigma).

Second hand prices are quite different I sold my mint one on here for £270 the cost of a second hand Canon would be at least £400, onluy reason I changed was because I got mine for a bargin.

Tokina and Tamron do wide angles too but I have no experience with them.

18 on a crop is not very wide - it only gives a equivalent FOV as a 27mm on FF.

18mm is 'wide', its just not super wide, big difference!

This is where the OP needs to be specific - do they want ultra/super-wide or a normal wide?

Thanks for the replies guys, it would most probably be 'super' wide - So it looks like i'll be on the hunt for a 10-22mm Sigma !!

lol :bonk:

Why "knock yourself out" over a 2mm difference at the upper end of the zoom? :p

I've used both the Canon 10-22mm (hired) and the Sigma 10-20mm (bought) and the difference between them is very small - negligible if focal length is your primary concern.

Would go for the Canon (as I did) 10-22mm

A lot of people go for the siggy but I hear so many fault stories with the and I cant be out doing a job and risk it not working.

I have the Tokina 11-16. Only problem I have is flare when shooting into the sun. Don't know what the Sigma and Canon alternatives are like with that.

Other than that it's an excellent lens for my 450D. Comes with a good hood, and feels like a tank - quite weighty, but feels well built.

Though I am getting addicted to using it and really should use other lens for certain shots.

+1 for the Canon 10-22 - lovely lens

I've found the Sigma 10-20 to be a very good lens for the money.

One of the Tokina offering... Either the 12-24 or the 11-16 depending on what you want. Can't go wrong with them.

Another vote for the Canon 10-22mm. It is quite addictive and a lot more versatile than I thought.

Canon 10-22 is a great lens and the Sigma 10-20 is a terrific alternative.

I had a Sigma 10-20, nice sharp copy, but didn't use it as much as I should have done.

Sold it then after a while missed the wide angle option, just got lazy carrying on using the 17-55 when something wider would have made a much nicer shot.

Saw a mint condition Canon 10-22 on here for what I thought was a decent price (£400) and went for it

Glad I did now and forgot how much overall detail can be got from a landscape, must say the Canon is by comparison the better albeit dearer lens

:plusone:

Exactly the same here. My Sigma copy is demon sharp! Got it off here (saw the pics beforehand). Cracking lens for the money, built like a tank and with a very cushy HSM focus. I love it. The canon felt less solid in comparison but it had slightly better contrast. I think all these soft sigma copy stories are a load of nonsense.

I would go with the sigma.

Not in build quality or sharpness it's not.

That's rather a sweeping statement and not borne out by anything other than your opinion, in fact from owning both I disagree on sharpness

Might be a load of old cobblers, but I think that the Canon EF-S lenses are the best of the specific crop sensor lenses
Well at least the 17-55 and 10-22 are anyway, maybe the 55-250 is as well pound for pound
Have tried a few of the Sigma and Tamron alternatives (admittedly not Tokina) and they are good, but not quite as good

If you are happy with your choice that's fine, but not quite as good if you feel you would have preferred something else really

Hi I bought the Tamron, here is a shot straight off the camera, 1/200 f3.5

The shot is wonky, but there is also a bit of bending and barrelling going on.

I was desperate for a wide angle lens and had to go with the Tamron as thats all I could get. Personally I'd go for the Sigma, much sharper and brighter from what I've seen.

I bought the canon 10-22 as when I tried them in the shop, the canon lens focussed faster. I've never been disappointed with it and have had several shots sold and published using it.
Sigma 10-20 can be very good or very poor. I've seen soft examples so if you do get one, check it out first, especially at the edges.

Canon 10-22mm is the best UWA you can get for a crop sensor.
