I recently sold my 18-200mm VR. I dont miss the long end but I could do with a wide angle in my bag. I don't want a zoom ans I just use my legs. I mainly shoot on location portraits. I also dont really want to spend over £250. I was thinking maybe the 24mm would be the best option? If anyone else has any ideas id like to hear them. Cheers

EDIT: I have just seen the tokina 12-24mm f/4 pro dx lens on ebay going for £300 including postage new, lots of them. Is this a good lens? looks interesting.

EDIT: Id also like it f/2.8 for lower light stuff and DOF, I know the tokina is f/4 but I thought it might be a major bargain.

Scour ebay for a good old manual focus one, you`d be surprised what you can get for your money if you can live without autofocus..........

Hello Luke! Now I wonder who you sold that 18-200 lens to?!!!!

I've got the Sigma 10-20 wide angle lens. This lens is the bees knees in wide angle photography and I can't recommend it high enough.

I kind of need autofocus because alot of my shoots involve kids catching them in the moment I suppose I could learn to manual focus just as fast but I feel safer with autofocus. At some point ill probably get a manual focus and practise with it.

Yes I wonder.....

That looks like a great lens, however I forgot to mention id like it to go to f/2.8 for DOF and lower light stuff.

I`m just about to order a Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 which, by all accounts, is supposed to be the bee`s knees and subject to far less sample variation than the Sigma. I`ve done plenty of research and there are very few compaints, although it has to be said, the Sigma is a very widely used model. The zoom range of the Tokina is obviously more limiting too. Still, I`m going for it.

Although its not that wide I'd be tempted to suggest the Sigma 30mm if you are looking for a nice prime.

The Tokina 11-16 is also supposed to be nice - the Tokina 12-24 is awesome, but its not f/2.8...

I have a 50mm so I want something a bit wider than 30mm. Im thinking I could get the tokina 12-24, wack the iso up then use noise reduction software?

You could do that.

Can I be honest and say I don't quite understand what you are trying to achieve here though...?

As the Nikkor 18-200 VR you sold was f/3.5 at 18mm which is faster than the Tokina which is f/4...

If you want a fast lens, than increasing the ISO doesn't really compensate.

The Tokina 24-24 is great, but I can't see that its really the lens you need...?

Yeah to be honest im way over complicating things as usual and it would be silly to get the 12-24. I sold it because I didnt get use out of it, only sometimes the wide angle. So sold it for £330, then thought id spend £250 or less on a wide angle so I have £70 left over, the whole thing would be quite pointless if I spent £300 ish on f/4. Thats why ive been looking at the 24mm in the first place.

Have a look at the 24mm f/2.8 AF-N or AF-D, you could get one for about £150 ish easy enough if you buy used.

Or get a 20mm f/2.0 AI-S which will knock your socks off - its manual focus, but you get a lot of depth of feild at 20mm so most stuff is in focus.

From MXV's current used stock:

D 36807 Nikon 24 f2.8 AF (sm marks) Exc 65
D 36806 Nikon 24 f2.8 AF-N Exc+ 79
A 71091 Sigma 24 f2.8 S/W II AF Hood Boxed Exc++ 59
C 31068 Nikon 28 f2.8 AFD Exc++ 120

Or get a 20mm f/2.0 AI-S which will knock your socks off - its manual focus, but you get a lot of depth of feild at 20mm so most stuff is in focus.

Don't you get distortion on straight lines at 20mm?

Thinking about it, if you REALLY want to push the boat out, get the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8

Its Nikon's best wide angle lens. I had it, and sold it as I need to be able to use filters for landscape, but its awesome. Or consider the Nikkor 17-35 f/2.8 which is a stunner as well.

I read this, and I realised OMG .. how did I not "see" this Tokina? 11-16/2.8 is fantastic ; where has my brain been all this time

Then, I saw this post and realised, what an idiot I was to spend my hard earned cash on a silly Voigtlander when something like this lurkes around .. this is what I really need and want (more want then need), if only I'd saved the money from the Voigt. to buy this ...

Now, fracster, you should please put a warning before your posts. That's one fine lens, but what a bargain ...

This thread is turning into a bogger fun thread that I realised.

Nice lens but I dont want to spend over £250. I think ill keep it simple and go for the 24 2.8

Do you really need something as wide as 10 or 12mm for photographing kids?

I think your best bet is the Tokina 12-24mm, not to much over your budget and will AF, it also normally gets very good reviews, you certainly won't get a wide angle zoom 2.8 for your budget, so the only other road is the manual ones that have already been mentioned, i guess you could also look at the Nikon - Nikkor 18-105 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX, you can get those for less than £200, good luck which ever you go for

When you mentioned the Sigma 10-20, Tokina 12-24 and Tokina 11-16mm?

Tbh, it sounds more like you'd be better with a 17-50 f/2.8 Tamron or something like that....

I only mentioned the tokina 12-24 as I saw it on ebay and thought it might be a bargain, other people suggested the others. I also said I was over complicating things and wanted to spend less than what I sold my 18-200mm for. This is a thread about me purchasing a wide angle lens, the first thing you say when you enter is "Do you really need something as wide as 10 or 12mm for photographing kids?" I was taking about autofocus which was quite obvious and never mentioned needing something that wide.

Thanks for your reply, I dont mind not having zoom though which is why I waas looking at the nikon 24mm 2.8 prime.

The prices Doug linked to from MXV are excellent, tbh I wonder if they've mispriced them, because the 28mm is a pile of junk, but thats priced where I'd expect the 24mm to be, and vice versa.

The Tammy 17-50 is superb as well though.

Thats interesting, that lens is the same price as the 24mm 2.8 prime. Do you know if the prim would be better quality? The fact that it goes to 17mm would be great and the zoom is just a bonus.

Ok no worries, i thought the zoom might just give you that little more flexibility if photographing children, another one i never thought of is the sigma 17-70mm which is 2.8 although not constant throughout the range.

The Nikon 18-70 is a good sharp lens, granted it is not 2.8, but its a little cracker. Wish I had never sold mine. They can be picked up relatively cheaply as well.

Just a thought.......:)

Ive just got used to funning around and cropping. What does constant throughout the range mean? if its f/2.8 I cant stop it down to f/4?

I was refering to the fact that you said that you needed a wide angle lens to photograph kids and had previously cited the Tokina12-24mm

Incidentally, the Tokina would be slower than your 18-200mm was at it's wide end, but you knew that before you mentioned it, right? ;)

You can stop it down to F whatever, through the range means that a lens is F2.8 throughout its zoom range, for example the Nikon 80-200 F2.8 can be F2.8 aperture from 80 right through to 200.

Im not going to argue with you flash but I have never once mentioned that I needed a wide angle lens to photograph kids. You quoted me taking about wanting autofocus so I have no idea where you got that from. I want a wide angle for when I have less room to get more in the shot.

Oh I see, thats good to know thanks.

No problem....

The downside is that the F2.8 versions tend to be very expensive...........

Whoa.......roll this back a wee bit.......you want an f/2.8 lens but you're not sure if that means you can use it at any aperture apart from f/2.8?

I want a lens that goes to 2.8 but didnt know what constant throughout the range meant.

EDIT: Im glad I now know otherwise I might have bought a lens and been dissapointed, which is why this place is good for people like me who havnt been doing it long. However my intention was really to get a prime anyway, I only mentioned the tokina because I thought it might be a bargain.

To be honest Im so used to just using my 50mm prime I think ill go with the 24mm still because im so used to not having the zoom, thanks for your help.

Fair enough, your thread title says you are looking for a wide angle lens, your first post says you mainly shoot portraits, your third post says "alot of my shoots involve kids".

From that I would therefore assume that you take portraits of kids (rather than shoot them with a gun and photograph it) and, as you have mentioned this in your thread entitled "wide angle for Nikon D300", that you wish to use the wide angle lens on your Nikon D300 to take pictures of kids during your portrait shoots.

Or you could go silly and get the 17-55 F2.8, that is a corker.......:D

Yes but I was refering to wanting autofocus and alot of my shoots do involve kids but that doesnt mean I want the wide angle mainly for shooting kids. It means that if I use this lens for kids it would be easier at the moment if it had autofocus not manual. This lens will mainly let used more for the senior work where im in urban areas. This is all pointless anyway because I only mentioned kids in the first place because someone mentioned manual. I didnt think id have to go into great detail about exactly what I was using it for. I just wanted simple advice on a lens which will be mainly used for portraits. Once again everyone give nice good advice but you have to come in and complicate things. Please just dont post in my advice threads mate because you dont help.
