After my somewhat disastrous start to my lens strategy (mainly, I didn't have one), I've come round to thinking that a wide angle lens might be good option.

I read an article some time ago which was called something like "the best non-L series L series lenses". I cannot, for the life of me, find that blog post again. What i do remember though was that it reviewed a wide angle canon zoom and basically said the only reason it couldn't be considered an L is because if was EF-S mount.

I *think* it was the 10-22 rather than the 10-18 they were referring to, but am not 100% sure.

I'd be looking to pick one up second hand and was going to wait a while before doing so, but the sudden possibility of a trip to New York might have lifted this up the priority list.

Does anyone know which one the article might have been referring to?

Very probably the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. But 17mm is not especially wide. It's wide-ish.
The EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is wide, and it's pretty decent, though not in the class of the 17-55.

It was definitely not the 17-55 in the blog I read.

I'd recently bought a 24-70 and remember thinking that this (whichever one it was) would slot in nicely underneath it.

The 10-22mm EF-S give the equivalent of 16-35mm in full frame.

It's an excellent lens, very flare resistant, and I highly recommend it, there's not much you can get that's wider.
I have no experience of the 10-18mm lens.

Just a bit of a thread resurrection...

I've now got the funds for the 10-18 and have read almost every blog post I can on the difference between the two.

On the plus side, the 10-18 is lighter, cheaper, has IS and, according to some reviews I've read, is pretty much bang on in terms of image quality.

But then I can't help thinking that if IQ is the be all and end of all of what I'm looking for - albeit on a budget - should I keep saving those pennies and get the 10-22? It's faster, better built and the IQ is (supposedly) better, even if it's just slightly.

Does anyone have experience of both? Is the 10-22 worth double the money of the 10-18?

I don't want to make another mistake...
