Wide Angle advice please

I need to get a wide angle lens for my Nikon D70s and I am looking at two at onestop digital. Budget is very limited, so these are my options, but the Sigma is out of stock atm with no indication of when they might be back in stock.

I know the Sigma has an excellent reputation, but how close is the Tamron as I could do with the lens fairly soon if possible - as in, HE has sort of agreed to my buying one and I have to do it before he changes his mind!! :gag: Also, both are specifically digital lenses but are they both appropriate for the sensor in the D70s? Sorry, I know that is sounding a dim question, but the sensor is the bit I have to clean dust off every so often and thats about the limit of my technical knowledge of sensors :nuts:
 
If I was on a small sensor I would definitely have one of those Sigma 10-20mm lenses in my armoury - a real tool!
Not to say the Tamron is bad but as I am sure many who own the Sigma (and there are a few here) will say, the sigma is great VFM.
 
I had an early sigma 10-20mm and it wasn't too great, focus was way out on one side which was a common early problem although I believe they have fixed that now and it is infact a very good lens. Since then I have bought a Tokina 12-24mm which at the time produced better results for me.

Tokina is £249.99 at onestop so cheaper than the Sigma too.

I don't really think you will regret decided on any one of these lenses though.
 
There is a guy selling a sigma 10-20 in the classifieds nikon mount and it still has warranty too...I had waited for long enough for one stop digital to get them back in stock...it has been ages and still no sign.
 
OH, hadn't looked at the Tokina, will certainly give that a shufty in the next few minutes. :clap:

Thanks for the heads up on onestop not having had the sigma for a while Pete, will check the classifieds, but I can discount that if I opt for new. :thumbs:
 
I use a 12-24mm (Albeit Sigma, not Tokina) on my 30D - went specifically for that one in my case as it is upgrade proof, not being a digi-only lens. I was initially concerned that I'd be better off with the 10mm wide end of the other Sigma but can honestly say I've been thrilled with the results from it and I have NO regrets in not going for the 10-20mm in the end. HTH. :)

Then you might want to look at this. OneStop comes well recommended by several people here, thoughthey are imports I beleive.

Its looking more likely that this wil be the one I buy, anyone got some shots with one by any chance?
 
I've got the Sigma 10-20 and yes it *can* be soft occasionally on the edges but I've made over £1500 from images sales from that lens so it works for me and my clients. Thats just 3 images. I hear the Tokina is technically better but you'll be happy with either.

The difference from 10 to 12 is 16% more....that’s a huge amount in anyone’s book.... Try imagining a nice wide 12mm shot image...then adding a whopping 16% ...:eek: ..... worth considering the sigma for sure. But then... more angle means more distortion.... :bonk: :lol:

...I'm thinking the Tokinas a fine lens by all accounts, a good choice indeed. I read bad things about its Chromatic aberration though... I not really sure what that means in real life, but I know I don't want any fringing or purple haze type things. :thinking:

I have a 10mm and an 11mm photo to compare taken on the sigma and a fuji s2, there is quite a difference even between 10 and 11mm

The pictures are fuzzy because it was pouring with rain and I had tried to wipe the lens but just spread the water around.

Not at all, tommorrow I will take a 10 and 12 mm shot but I think that you have it probably about right.

Take into account the nikon is a 1.5 crop as oppose the 1.6 crop that the canon is. When I was deciding on getting one of these super wides I was going by the wide angle the pro's were using on there medium format camera's. Via my rough calcuations I decided I wanted an equivilant of a 20mm on a FF 35mm. So for a 1.6 crop this translates to around 12mm and closer to 13mm for a nikon 1.5 crop.

Basically I don't think you need less than 12mm and if needs be I would not hesitate getting a 12 to X lens.

Saying that I just got the Sigma 10-20 for my 30D and it's the biz :)
 
Indeed, many thanks to paul for those shots, you really can see some difference in the widths.

Its probably going to be a month or two before I buy mine now, as the D200 was an unexpected, albeit very much welcomed, expense, but still definately need one before September Holiday, all those fjords will, I think, need to be captured with a wide angle for best effects.

So, looking at Pauls shots, it will either be the Tokina 12-24, or a Sigma 10-20, depending on finances and who is selling what at the time. I suppose the only consolation is that prices generally fall rather than go up.
 
If your not worried about getting a 1 year international warrenty over the UK 3 year warrenty, then buy from onestop digital. The price you see is the price you pay. The 10-20 is only £263.99 ;);)
 
Sigma UK will not honour the warranty of a lens bought from abroad, including Hong Kong, unless you have a VAT receipt. Which is a big risk with Onestop as they are good enough to usually get through customs untouched.

Phew, this thread took a bit of finding - I am waiting with some anticiaption the arrival of the latest lens to grace the D200 - a Sigma 10-20 :woot: :woot:

Thanks for all the advice guys, it took a while to get my hands on it, but it is now on its way to me! Cant wait to have a play. :D
 
You won't regret it its an awesome lens!I love mine but haven't used it loads..nice to know its there though.
 
:woot: Its here!! Definately off to have a play this afternoon methinks. Will try and do what paul did and post some comparison shots if I find anything worth doing.

Next on the wish list, 105mm macro... but I suspect that might have to wait until after our holidays :lol:
 
i bought the sigma last week and i am absolutely in love with its, fantastic lens
