Hi everyone,

I'm kind of new here, I been on the forum for a few years, but always just been reading and learning off everyones posts/threads.

I joined when I was the owner of a 400D 4 years ago, so a newbie, and since then learnt a lot and moved on to a 7D, which I recently sold for a 5Dmk3 (GREAT bit of kit).

Anyhow, in the last 4years I have developed into starting to doing shoots for people on a freelance basis, hence the upgrades over the time. I used to have a 10-22mm with the 7D, and of course that had to go since I moved to the 5D3, I need a replacement wide angle. So as per title, whats everyones views/opinions/suggestions on either of the mentioned lens.

I currently have a 50mm f1.4, 24-105 f4L, Sigma 150-500mm.

Advanced thanks for any input to this set up and suggestions! ;)

Thanks.

Pat

The 16-35mm is a versatile wide angle, and can go very wide at the 15mm end on full frame. The 8-15mm is a fish eye lens with ultra wide angle capability. It's interesting if you want something like this, but it's a specialist lens and doesn't fall into the normal definition of a wide angle. I'd choose the 16-35mm.

Yes yes, totally aware that the 8-15mm is a fisheye, but was more looking at the 15mm end of it with the compliments of being able to go down to 8mm, just contemplating whether I would have much usage at the lower end thats all, which is why the 16-35mm, however, not sure how much of the higher end of that I would be using, so just wanted some opinions from you guys to what to expect, I havent tried either of them out yet.

Because on the 10-22mm I mostly used the 10mm on a 7D, so 16mm, hardly ever went to 22mm range on it.

Have u considered the 17-40 f4L? A friend of mi e has a sigma 12-24 on his 5D

The Samyang 14mm is another wild card to consider also. All depends on how you want to usethe UWA.

I also have a Sigma 12-24mm for my 5D. It's a fantastic lens and it shows no real world distortion. The field of view has to be seen... as do your feet :D

Hmmm, Im leaning towards the 16-35mm now tbh, I dont know where I would be able to take a look and have a try on the Samyang or the Sigma variants.

17-40mm, never considered, but will probably have a look, anyone got any shots from the 16-35mm at 16mm uncropped and the 17-40mm uncropped that I can take a look at?

Thanks

If you're in Hong Kong now then you can try my Samyang, and you can play around with both the Canon lenses in their showroom for as long as you want.

The Canon ones, sure I can try in the showroom here til my heart is content, thing is, dont know of any Sigma or Samyang dealers who will allow me to try without buying, a lot of the local dealers here are aren't too friendly if you dont buy!

Had a look at the 17-40mm on flickr, looks promising, a great deal cheaper than the 16-35mm too, will have to go give it a try.

I think Sigma have a small showroom of sorts, in their office - 12/F of Kodak House in North Point, but you might have to ring up (2573-6655) to see if they've got a copy of the lens. I had a similar experience when wanting to try out a Ricoh camera and some accessories. I phoned them up and they gave me the address of their distributor's showroom, where I had a play around and the manager told me the cheapest places in HK to buy it.

And I got my Samyang from a nice old lady (but doesn't speak English) in shop called PhotoMan in Sham Shui Po, where I went and came back a few times before getting it.

Thanks for the info Rod. BTW are you Rod from SE? If so, I am Patrick from RH, CF's colleague.

I too have just sold my 10-22mm which I mostly used at the 10mm end and have just bought a used but like new Samyang 14mm for my 5d and first impressions are that it's very sharp even good in the corners and very cheap!(a tenth of the price of a canon14mm SH) It's quite well made too though the focus scale is a bit out and it's manual focus but not much of an issue once stopped down as everything is in focus anyway!

No problem, but you have me confused with someone else I thinks... those initials and name don't register with me at all

My brother has the 16-35mm and I must admit I like it a lot better than the 17-40mm which I used to own.. my copy of the 17-40 was a disappointing lens in the fact that I never got anything that really jumped of the page and made me say wow

the 16-35mm of my brothers is a lovely lens obviously wont be buying it though when I can use it for free anytime I like WooHoo LOL

HAHA, no worries mate, but you have exactly the same initials as someone I know in my industry thats also into photography, worth a try!

Buttlicker - I think I have decided to go for the 16-35mm, just need to find time to go out and try one now, a lot of *** with the 17-40mm have told me its worth it to spend a bit more for the 16-35mm ;)
