Back in the days of steros and music centres and Hi-Fi .............. Hi-Fi meant High Fidelity.
So when we see Wi-Fi outside hotels ... its obviously meant to mean Wireless Internet.... but where does the Fi fit in?

Are they just coining a phrase?

Never really thought of it before, but you're right it seems...

The explanation from Wiki:

The term "Wi-Fi" suggests "Wireless Fidelity", comparing with the long-established audio recording term "High Fidelity" or "Hi-Fi", and "Wireless Fidelity" has often been used in an informal way, even by the Wi-Fi Alliance itself, but officially the term does not mean anything.

Oh good! Not OFFICIALLY mad yet then!!! :D
