Wi-Fi on Mobile Phones? Useful? Useless?

I am planning to buy a new mobile phone for my other half and was wondering if I skip on the Wi-Fi capability of the phone and whether it will be a huge show stopper?

I download a lot of video podcasts to my Omnia via wifi @ home so that I can watch 'em on train journeys. :)

Very very useful (especially if you dont have unlimited data). Do note, it uses quite a lot of battery!! (but then your usually on home with it on, so near a charger...)
 
Very useful. I use the wifi on mine when at home as well as when at BT hotspots and it's obviously much faster than 3G.

I wouldn't want one without it now.

I don't know if it's the way we set it it up but my other half has a 5800 and the wifi is next to useless. It never joins the preferred networks, instead trying to download over 3G or edge... On the other hand the iPhone has never missed a beat when it comes to wifi...
 
Very useful indeed, I am currently posting this from my Motorola Dext (Android) phone, Ai am in the Doninican Republic on the hotel's WiFi. I can check my Email, communixcate with evryone via Facebook etc. I can't use the phone, because I can't connect to the local nedtwork for some reason. Of course, I can still read TP, great!
 
Very very useful! I'm always surfing on my iPhone, Nokia I would have a look at the n97 or n900
 
Very useful for me, but can imagine it would be less so if all you do is text and call...

Nokia wise I'd only go for something with the S60 operating system, so one of the N/E range.
 
iPhone addict here and love playing with phones, personally if it has to be Nokia would stear clear of the N series of phones as prone to problems unfortunately...

Wi-Fi is like air con in a car once you've had one with it you wouldn't want to go without :)
 
For me its a big winner too! :thumbs: didnt work very well on my nokias but on iPhone its a class act!
 
Faster than enhanced networks, even if you do have unlimited data it probably won't include roaming, so useful when travelling, especially in the US where most hotels, bars, diners, even shops have wifi access.
 
I'd be totally lost without the WiFi and 3G on my Iphone.

Adds so much more functionality!

Spoil yourself and get an Iphone, there are some great apps that make it much more worthwhile - DSLR remote for example.
 
Wi-fi is a must for me - i own a HTC Hero and the missus is always shouting at me to get off the phone cos i am surfing, checking emails, on TP and Ultimte Reef etc.

I fell into the N97 trap. It's the worst phone I've ever had in my life, really difficult to get it set up and would continuously forget settings. Sound quality was awful when phoning.

I bought an unlocked iPhone (here on TP) and never looked back.

Indeed, my N97 should be appearing in the For Sale forum soon (when I'll suddenly be singing its praises as the best phone in the world).
 
Deffo useful on a smartphone. Connected to wifi my iPhone is much faster for internet based stuff.

Agree. Steer *massively* clear of the N97, worst phone Nokia has ever produced.

WiFi on a phone is really a necessity now, wouldn't consider buying a handset without this capability. As others have said, regardless of unlimited data packages, still quicker to download emails etc. via WiFi, so would highly recommend it.
 
WiFi is fone on my Nokia 5800, never had a problem. Its a very good value handset, offers lots of stuff and apps thru the OVi store. For my upgrade, I'll probably end up with a Samsung Jet or LG Chocolate BL40.
 
Love having it on my iPhone, although I am carrying the netbook around with me more and more and am not using the phone so much as a consequence.
 
Another vote yes here. I have an N97 and it isn't that bad. Its not great but its an ok smartphone, great browsing and you can download content from iPlayer to watch later - another use for WiFi...
 
Nokia E72.

I turned to this phone after successive Blackberrys and I'm sure I'll never go back. The E72 does everything it is supposed to so well and even makes up for Nokia's deep menu system with its superb array of features. I've had match-ups against iPhone owners where they have yet to prove that their phone has any apps above and beyond the E72 which are of any use and the Wi Fi and GPS both proved invaluable.

dSLR Remote. Set your camera up in a hide, connected via USB to a netbook. Connect your iPhone to that netbook via WiFi. Sit in the comfort of your living room watching the iPhone screen show what your camera can see. Use the iPhone to adjust camera settings and to take a photo when everythings right.

Anything like that for Nokia?
