I haven't listened to him in years, nor did I realise he advocated the same. Nice to know I'm not alone with my thoughts. Not that our wimpy society would ever implement such a scheme.

And yes, some very undesirable people are breeding, and it's now at 2nd and 3rd generation levels too. :(

I used to listen to him every night, but he got thrown off Talk Sport for making politically biased comments during the period prior to an election when that is prohibited (He was merely expressing views about all these dodgepots seeking re-election.)
I think he is on a local radio station somewhere now.
 
When I was a kid I didn't know right from wrong, but my parents did - therefore they did the thinking for me - that's what they're there for.
If I did wrong it was explained to me - if I did it again it was reinforced with a thick ear - the words might have meant nothing to me, but I remembered the pain and/or any other punishment - no TV, no dinner etc.
As I grew older I came to realise what was right and wrong - if I still did wrong - this time deliberately, Dad dispensed with the 'talk' and went straight to punishment. I therefore became aware of the concept of 'consequences'. Sometimes I still misbehaved, but in the knowledge that there would be hell to pay if I got caught...
Once I was caught stealing some fruit from the greengrocer - i'd have been about 6 or 7 at the time - I was handed over to a copper - I was terrified of him - big fella with on old-style Victorian cape and zebra stripes on the cuffs - huge 'Melchett' style moustache...
Instant thick-ear from the copper and then made to work sweeping up the greengrocer's back-yard while the copper had a brew with the owner.
But then the greengrocer gave me half-a-crown for the work I'd done - a vast sum to a 7-year old in those days.
I never stole again - it's better to work for the reward, I found...

If there are no consequences to doing wrong then where is the incentive to do right?

The Law as it stands is fine - it's the interpretation of the Law by the Legal system that's at fault and the lack of consequence for wrong-doing.
I think we've come a long way since stealing bread was a capital offense or earned someone a one-way ticket to Botany Bay, but we've gone too far in the wrong direction.
People need to be reassured that criminals will be dealt with 'appropriately' according to the prevailing attitudes of the day - that's all that 'law' is really - a reflection of society's wishes for a safe and secure environment. Law can be changed if it's not doing the job - and it is - frequently. Just ask loudly and often enough and it'll happen...that's why we vote for the Parties that best reflect our ideals and standards...

Oh and as an aside - my Dad never believed that I'd earned the half-crown so took it off me and sent me to bed early. Dad was like that.
I remind him of these things now and then, just to make him miserable in his old age...lol
 
Excellent post Rob. We do seem to think of ouselves as so enlightened these days in our treatment of offenders and the tolerance we show them, but when the wheel goes full circle, as it surely must, future generations are going to think we were pretty dumb!

Rob's post is excellent.

Things have actually got worse than parents who do not know right from wrong.
There seems to be a group who delight in seeing their poxy little scrotes doing wrong. For them wrong is the new right.

Would you really want that level of state control, where even your ability to have children was subject to government approval? Call me cynical, but I can forsee the rules being bent somewhat so that known supporters of the political party in power at the time would stand a far greater chance of being approved than opponents, whatever their parenting skills. I'd far rather tolerate the warts of a free society than slide into an Orwellian 1984 style dictatorship - we're heading too far in that direction already, in my opinion.

Be careful what you wish for, it might come true!

I didn't say it would be under government control, though that is the likelyhood I guess. IMHO it is the activities of the warts of a free society which have already put us into an Orwellian 1984 big brother state of affairs.

Until we have a society which will and does police itself to the greater degree we will endure more and more warts and further erosions of our freedoms as we seek to control them.

Strangely enough, the more we respect and live by the law the less we have a need for the controls it seeks to impose.

What really worries me is the rate of breeding!

Call them chavs or whatever you want, but this segment of the population is more likely to start having children at a younger age and to have a greater number of children . . . their children are also likely to go on and repeat the cycle.

At the other end of the scale, people that are actually making a contribution to society are having children later in life, having fewer children or even deciding not to have children at all. Education and career are coming first and then considerations like the cost of childcare to working parents are coming into play.

Combine these two scenarios and unless something changes, there will come a tipping point where more than half the population is "chav" and that becomes the social norm for the UK.

Think about it . . . it's a scary thought! :shake:

I, and I feel anyone who is, or has served (especially in recent times) will agree that this would be a horrid concept.

Some of the guys (& girls) we have joining now are fantastic, others are, less than.
They 'know their rights', know exactly how far they can push, that they cant get a slap for choppsing off.

For some, training is the first glimpse of discipline, and they dont like it one bit.
I was a typical brat when I joined at 17, I made the then fatal mistake of gobbing off to an NCO, and I damn quick discovered the error of my ways, ironically I am now quite good mates with the guy who educated me.

On the subject of kids, my young one, who I love more than anything in the world, is currently testing the boundaries.
I had typed an example, but then thought about the world we live in and did not fancy a SWAT style visit from the SS (social services)


I do not in any way condone the use of violence in kids that some seem to think is ok, however I do feel that its all about escalation, a swift backhander from my dad has not turned me into a wife beater or serial killer, and we have a great relationship!

2007/08 figures (Hansard) cost per prisoner in England and Wales - £39,000 per year.
In Florida they banged them up for $16,000 per year.
Wonder how it costs more to house the lags in our prisons than it does to put people up in a smart hotel.
 
if not national service ( armed forces ) then why cant it be gutter cleaning or similar , anything to get them earning their benefit , instead of roaming the streets like packs of animals looking for the next poor sod to rob :bang: , i really dont understand the mentality of not working , i have been out of work for nigh on 5 months , i start work again on monday and i cant wait :thumbs:
 
Maybe we should learn the chav language and tell them to sod off in a way they understand (unable to be printed here :eek:)
