Im currently planning an extended trip around Asia, India and Africa (more on this soon) and in researching the trip i came across three truly inspiring videos. I defy anyone to watch them and not want to get out and see the world.

They are directed by producer Rick Mereki and commissioned by STA Travel Australia. All the clips are around a minute in length and they leave you wanting more!

I was planing on travelling anyway but watching these has inspired me to try and document my travels in some way.

What do the TP masses think?

I think it's a great plan. I've never been able to understand people who don't travel. In fact, I know a lot of people who have never even left their country of birth - I just can't get my head around the idea of people being satisfied to live their whole lives without seeing more of the world around them. For me, travelling is one of my greatest passions, and it gives me perspective. I've travelled widely and have lived in three different countries too (and I'm planning yet another move), and these experiences have have a huge effect on my life.

I wish you all the best with your huge adventure! I can't watch the videos right at this moment as they don't seem to work on my iPad :/

[edit]

Oh wait, it's just the embedded versions that aren't loading - the links work on the iPad. What a cool idea!

Why wouldnt you want to travel the world? How about not having any money for starters

Some places I really do want to see and experience, and one day I'll go there, but like Rich I have no money.

Plus there's plenty of places right in this series of Islands here that I'd rather go see first.

Actually... travelling doesn't necessarily have to cost a fortune. While I prefer the comfort of business class flights and luxury hotels myself because I like to spoil myself, my sister (who doesn't earn a lot of money) has managed to travel quite extensively around Europe on a tiny budget. Staying in youth hostels, travelling by train (mainland European rail travel is much cheaper than in the UK, generally), and not eating at restaurants every day can save you a lot of money. Also, as members of the EU, if you were to spend a few months travelling around other EU countries, you could also feasibly work here and there for some money.

Well, at this particular moment in my life I'm not interested in travelling to foreign climes ... but then I have been around the world a couple of times, visited more than 100 countries and lived in 4 of them :D

I do plan to travel again in the future because there are still places I want to see and cultures I wish to experience.

My wife, on the other hand, is totally indifferent to travelling or even foreign holidays

So far, the extent of my foreign adventures during my 37 years has been

Gran Canaria
Tenerife
Spain
Andorra
France
Bulgaria
Mauritius
Scotland
Wales

If all goes to plan, by the end of 2012 I will have no debts and a grown-up son who can work out how to work a microwave for a week or two.

Then the following are on my list...

Canada
New Zealand
Maldives
Japan
Hong Kong
Dubai

And then I can pick somewhere to live ;-)

That doesn't mean you don't want to travel the world, just that you don't have the resources to enable you to do so. My OH has medical issues that preclude us from taking many of the trips we would love to. So, money and health sure are a barrier :(

On the other hand, it does mean that we are exploring more of the UK and finding some amazing places here (even if, often, it can actually be more expensive than going overseas). :cuckoo:

I would love to see a few places in the world but do not have the money to do so, both my kids ( now in their late 20s) have been all over the world, my son lives in China but has been all over the far east and Canada as well, my daughter has been to Kenya,Madagascar, done the Inca trail and been to Australia, when I was that age travel was very expensive and many of these places were not open to visit, I'm just not in the habit of foreign travel and the other problem I have is I can't stand crowds of people and tourists, one of the reasons I live where I do, just a poor miserable old git really.

For me, I thing that amazes me is people who have been to several other countries but only been in 2 counties in the UK - for me, England/Scotland (I've already seen a fair bit of Wales), Ireland and then some of our little islands would be first.

The only country I would LOVE to go to is Madagascar, just for the unique wildlife. I have too many pets and not enough money to travel the UK though, never mind anywhere else!

Thats not an excuse for not wanting to travel the world, thats an excuse for not being able to travel the world! :)

I'd love to travel the world myself! One day!!

Some people actually don't travel much because they feel guilty about their carbon footprint. An alternate name for those vids could be POLLUTE THE PLANET! MOVE, LEARN, EAT! ;)

I have a bit of that and i'm not remotely interested in people or anything to do with people, so there's only a handfull of wildlife type places i would want to go to.

Yeah, remember when they had that demonstration at the G8 in Edinburgh and the climate change protestors flew in on airliners from all over the world

Pretty much the reason why I haven't been anywhere of note in recent years. Wish I'd done more when I was young and without responsibilities, as many travellers are... I'd love to see loads of places and uplifting, positive films like these are great for inspiring individuals to do so. But the harsh reality is that priorities come into play.

Those videos are cool - the Move film reminds me of something I've seen before, probably in a music video - but how many of us actually have the money to go out and do something like that. I'm sure if the commission hadn't come through for that guy, he wouldn't have gone to half those place. But still, he did, and got some cool results....

This money thing keeps raising its head. You can travel for a fairly small amount staying in hostels, couch surfing, working as you travel, stay with friends, work for transport...

Those that are too used to the comforts of home or hotels may very well not be able to travel cheap but if you budget correctly it is not as prohibitive as some may initially think. While some may genuinely not be able to scrape money together to travel, for me it's about prioritising what I want to do so I'm selling endless material things I posses to fund it.

This has gone a tad off topic though, i posted the videos for discussion, not for the logistics of actual travel.

I think the title of the thread is at odds with you wanting thoughts on the videos - it's a leading question that many, as I did, want to counter with real-life obstacles - and as is the case with TP, going off-topic is pretty-much a certainty

If the comments were supposed to be just on the videos, then i not only found them uninspiring but anti-inspiriing and annoying to the point where i thought that's the last type of holiday/travel i'd like to have :)

I'm not allowed to have my own personal taste?
I'd just rather be in a shack with no running water, no people, no man-made objects as far as the eye can see and a wildlife hotspot nearby.
Sorry for not subscribing to the normal eating out every night, wandering around a city in amazement every day type holiday ;)
I'm also posting my views simply because some people seem clueless as to why people wouldn't want an experience shown in those videos. Some people genuinely don't. Each to their own eh :)

Where did I say you're not allowed to have your own taste? Your repeated posts in this thread just look like you're looking for attention or trying to put a damper on other peoples' enthusiasm. We get it. You don't like people. You don't like cities. You care about carbon footprints (although you don't care quite enough to refrain from using a computer). Why persist in adding even more of your negativity to the thread? And all the passive aggressive smilies aren't really helping either.

For someone who claims to find the videos so unappealing and doesn't appear to like travelling, it's odd that you have the most posts in the thread. Funny how negative people always put so much effort into their negativity.

And now I've wasted enough of my energy on you, so cheers.

I like the videos and the way they were shot, sure would whet the appetite for those with the travel bug. I think there was even something there for animal lovers.... i spotted pigeons, sheep, elephants and a bucking bronco too:D

For me though it would be all too rushed with that sort of travel itinerary. I like to wander about a bit more and get to see a bit more of the places....but maybe that's showing my age:shrug:

I live to travel the world and meet new cultures... my aim is to visit 3 to 4 countries a year and next year is looking good with Guatemala, the Philippines, Ethiopia and Vietnam :D

I am lucky to be able to do this for work... if I couldn't travel I don't know what I would do :(

I mentioned personal taste because i was trying to state that some people's tastes are absolutely the opposite of the videos posted, and then on top of that the title suggested a complete non-understanding of how anyone couldn't like them or that style of life and i answered the topic with my posts. Simple as that.
If the title of this thread was different then i wouldn't have even bothered posting. I don't just jump into threads to spoil them. I try to add viewpoints that contribute to the topic.
I don't feel negative about travel. I just do it my own way. If you take that as me trying to put a damper on things then you have the problem.

There was and is no aggression in my spirit at all in this thread and the smileys were genuine. You are being overly defensive about all this for some reason as your computer use comment implies. I said i have SOME of that feeling about carbon footprints. Not that i live in an Amish type community.
Learn to accept that people are different and not worry about it. I've not got a problem with how you want to live.

I'm out of here.

I would love to travel and possibly live elsewhere but with the career I have chosen I'm limited to where I can go. I wish when I was younger (ok... I am only 23!) I wished I had spent a year or so travelling and working, meeting new people, cultures/food etc... However, I can still get 3 weeks holiday twice a year which is long enough to go anywhere really, but it's more of a holiday than proper "travelling".

But... I live in Scotland and still haven't visited half of the amazing places and sights it has to offer. I think I'll try sort that out next year! :)

I liked the first video and it's something i've been pondering again

I think for most people its a case of never experiencing it. Travelling is like a virus, you have to catch it first, but once you do its a b*tch to get rid of

I made a pretty pathetic attempt to travel 20 years ago and got as far as Florence. Over the years since, I have said I was going to have another go, but first I needed to see more of the UK, rather than have real itchy feet for world experiences.
I have no money, no responsibilities, no strong family ties and a flimsy network of friends.

I am going to do it this year and will keep putting that MOVE clip at the top of my FB page to urge me on :D

Travelling is great, however don't forget the amazing places in the UK!

It amazes me the member of people I meet who have been to New Zealand, but not to Scotland! Exploring new places doesn't have to be expensive or involve travelling halfway round the world! (That said I'm looking forward to a trip to central America in 6 weeks).

Well I do not want to travel the world as I cannot afford it. Does that sound any better

You reminded me of an aunt I had. She always travelled to the south coast of England and knew Devon and Cornwall like the back of her hand. However despite living in Manchester virtually all her life, she never ventured any further north for one reason or another.

I fully agree with you about the lovely locations here in the UK. Although I would love to travel abroad more often, you can sometimes overlook what you have on your own doorstep.

That makes no sense?

Are there cameras or lenses you don't want because you can't afford them?

Or are there cameras and lenses you would like to have BUT you can't afford them?

Would love to go travel the world if I had the money and no wife and kids to worry about. Be nice to spend a few days here and there and move on to wherever I felt like going next. First place would be back to Venice as my camera broke as soon as I got there years ago so I only got 3 photos.

True. The videos are about experiencing different cultures for the most part, so if you are not into that, then i guess you wouldn't find it inspiring/ interesting.

Though, i don't totally get the money argument, ever. Its not about money. its about priorities. If you have a mortgage, then you have enough money to travel, but you chose to have a mortgage. There are always other influences, but it is still all a choice. Sure you might not be able to do *everything* you want, but you can do some.
(like the analogy to camera equipment above... just because you don't/can't have a <whatever model> and a 70-200mm 2.8 IS, doesn't mean you can't shoot.)

Its alot easier (and cheaper!!!) here in Europe to travel to very different places than it is from other parts of the world, thats for sure!!!

Its neither, right nor wrong, just different. Though for some reason, that concept is unfathomable to some people.

Back to the topic- regardless, the way the videos are shot and the idea behind them has to be admired. Whether its you 'thing' or not. Very clever, and executed well.
And a very successful advertising Campaign for STA Travel Australia.

The amount of folk that rush off around the world yet don't (ever) appreciate the delights to be had closer to home is criminal.

Just like us - people travel half way around the world to the very places we overlook.

I did the rounds years ago and have since settled, married, had children etc and am pleased that the itch was scratched years ago despite the fact that it was 'pre photography' for me.

Love travelling myself and hopefully once I finish my MLTE course i'll be off to the Canary Islands and Norway to do some outdoor training, obviously camera in hand aswell.
But i've found after travelling extensively through Europe including Iceland & Turkey is that the best sights to be seen around such places is away from the tourist sights and cities. Perhaps it's just the adventurer in me which likes to go to Switzerland exclusively for the hiking accessibility and seeing sights like the peaks of the Alps that (for obvious reasons) you don't get to see in most capital cities.
Yes money is always an issue but a rucksack & camping gear soon halves the budget, with plenty left over incase of emergencies. This goes for anywhere wether you are planning a mountaineering hike in the Alps, Andes or Himalayas. No 4/5 star hotels up there.

those were superb videos. I love travelling.

I have been round the world backpacking twice in my 20's. I look forward to when my kids have left the nest and then i'll be travelling again.

Although I have to say the worst part of travelling is the actual travel itself. The 12 hour flights, the 4 hour bus journeys, the walking holding your backpack in the rain - all of that sucks eggs. But the actual exploring the new places when you are there is what makes it special.

Travelling to me though doesn't necessarily have to be abroad. An hour and a half in every direction from where I live here leads you to some very different culinary cuisines for example:

Staffordshire oatcakes (stoke)
Scouse (Liverpool)
Pie in a bun (Wigan)

and not to mention the local ales which all change from place to place.

Anyone who I have met that has travelled - either afar, or not that far (i.e. all over UK) is definitely a richer person for it, I think you grow a lot by exploring different parts of the world and country.
