I want to be able to open, post and edit my RAW photos without them changing.

I suspect that Google Photos resamples the RAW file because it’s so large and what you see is what you get.

Welcome to the forum by the way, good intro.

A RAW file is meant to be changed. RAW is the unprocessed digital equivalent of a film negative from which you make the final image. I suspect though that when you are viewing them you are viewing a sample, not the actual file as google isn't set up to deal with RAW files.

This...

A raw file is not viewable without demosaicing... well, it is; but it won't look anything like what you are expecting. If you upload a raw file to a service like photops/flickr/etc, they are rendering jpegs from it for display on the internet.

A raw file is like looking at the matrix. its just numbers that need to be converted into something meaningful that digital images displays do. Its a bit like the view screen on the back of the camera showing you the file you just took in RAW - its a digital interpretation of the RAW file using whatever interpreter that the camera manufacturer built into the cameras software.
