Why use high ISO

Hi,

I honestly dont know why anyone uses high ISO.

Higher ISO settings make the images noisy. I see that there are lots of noise reduction software choices but to me that just gives you a method of making the picture look like it was taken at a lower ISO setting.

I must be missing something! Can someone please explain it.

CHEERS

I use high(ish) ISOs a lot - 3200/6400 - mainly because I like working with ambient light first and foremost and would prefer to do so than just try to light the whole scene with a flashgun and fail. Flash play a big part in my photography but not in those kinds of instances.

Granted, there's noise in the shot (which can be reduced using NR software) but it's a small price to pay..... I'd rather get a noisey shot than no shot at all.

I wouldn't write off high ISOs but there is obviously a point where the handling of those ISOs by the particular camera starts to reduce in effectiveness. I see the 'ceiling' that I'm comfortable on my D7000 as being 6400 but if needs be, then I'll max the camera out and see what I can do with it in PP.
