Flickr in its free version has a limit of 200 picturesx whereas Fotopic and Picassa have substantially larger free allocations,so whats the big attraction with Flickr

I cant say I even considered anything other than flickr. And having just had a quick look at picasa, it looks like i did right.

I think Flickr limits you to 100MB upload a month? Not 200 pictures. If you keep your file sizes down before upload this is more than enough.

Whereas Picasa you have a simple 1024MB limit.

Personally I like Flickr because of the groups and friends thing. It's a bit like social networking site I suppose but for photography. I can see when friends upload new pics and they can see when I do. I like the groups and it is pretty easy to use.

It has a great social aspect and just works well for me. I also like looking through Flickriver, you can come across some great photos.

It cheep, easy to use, you get feedback on your pics, you can look at other people pics, you can see when your friends / family add new pics, you can hide your pics if you just want it hosted for posting else where, you can arrange them into sets, there uplaoder makes it really easy to get your pics online, you can set your permissions, you can view the exif data of the pics, you get all kinda stats i think ill stop there :)

You get a limit of 200 photos on your page and 100mb a month uploads on the free account. For something like 19 quid a year you get unlimited uploads, unlimited storage, unlimited bandwith (my account has had knocking on 70,000 views in 5 months), and all the benefits everyone else has mentioned. Having looked at stuff on other photosharing sites, I think I made the right choice.

After trying some of the other photo hosting websites, I upgraded my flickr to a pro account.
I like being able to create sets, posting pics on various groups and getting more people to look at my pics and receiving feedback.
The flckr community is much better imho.

At work, I have access to pretty much unlimited space/bandwidth on our work servers. I was going to toy with setting up my own sort of site for having all my photos on etc.

However, Flickr looked like the right choice to me. It worked out at £12 a year, and they are doing a promo with 3 months extra free as well. Not even worth thinking about going elsewhere for that sort of cash!

Well worth it just for the groups feature, where you can have a look at some very specific sorts of photography (i.e. all photos done on a Canon 50mm f/1.4 for example)

Worth every penny !

It also helps that there are plugins available for Aperture, so I can upload direct to flickr from there :)

I had a free flickr account for a while and then upgraded to the pro account. I find it really good value and easy to use but most of all there's some inspirational photos on there, so I just enjoy it.

I get my Pro account free, since I'm with BT Yahoo! Only just started using it though, 'cos I sort of wondered the same. But I just see it as another way of sharing photos, and spreading the word on your work. I use it as a portfolio. :D

Great community,My local group (nottingham) is quite friendly and active they have photo meets every month. Its easy I have no idea how to build a website so i'd rather just link friends and family my flickr most of them have it bookmarked now.Its useful when I need to find results from a certain film, camera or lens I can just pop in a search and a ton of results will come up.I've made quite a few friends through it which otherwise i'd of never met its always more enjoyable shooting with someone else!

its easy to use, plenty of space for me at the moment and you can share your photos in the community

Because it's not C**P and doesn't require the effort and expenditure of setting up and designing your own website.

Hi Chris. To be honest I'm not actually sure! I've only just started using Flickr, and I didn't know that I was entitled to the free Pro account. So when I signed up, it was a basic account (no Pro), and I thought about upgrading. Forgot about it for a few days, and before I knew it, I had a Pro account!

So I'm not sure how it worked, although I do sign in with my BT Yahoo username and password. And I don't have my BT email address in my profile, so that's obviously not necessary either.

Hope this helps

I signed up for a free flickr account having seen a few people', it was just the first site a saw! When I signed up, and used by BT Yahoo e-mail address to register, it provided me with a link saying 'upgrade to a pro account' or something, clicked on it, and it was done! It was a pretty nice surprise to be honest! Although I'm still not sure what a pro account actually gets you, having never looked into it! So that's why I use it!
