Why the PSD file not opening in transparent format?

Someone has sent me a PSD file of an image which is in transparent format, but when I was trying to open it in Photoshop cc 2015.5 its showing white background instead of transparent one. Why is it showing like that? How to fix it up?

You need to save the original in PNG or something similar. Without looking at the list of file extensions, I can't be definite. It confused me a while back

Native PSDs support transparency but only if one layer is transparent. It sounds like the file was was flattened. Unfortunately you can't fix it your end without going back to the original file.

If it just the background that should be transparent it should be easy to adjust yourself. I don't use Photoshop so cannot offer precise instructions but I would try selecting the background and deleting it.
