why sony?

err.. don't you get wireless flash for free with all the "middle" nikon's? D70 up to the D700 all do wireless flash through the popup flash. The D3 and D3X don't have a popup flash and the D40-60 don't have it presumably due to budget (or product differentiation) issues.

of course, I have a nikon D50 without wireless flash and I'd like to have it...

You are indeed correct.

the silly thing about the sony nifty fifty situation is they own the design for the minolta 50mm f1.7 which everyone fights over on the bay so surely it wouldn't take much to put it back into production even if they opted for the a cheaper plastic body etc? They could do the same with the Minolta 'beercan' and a couple of other minolta lenses which I think would give them instantly more appeal as what they lacked for me were middle ground lenses somewhere bettween the kit lenses and the super expensive pro ones.

I think you're spot on there. For the middle ground lenses I have had to go with Sigma/Tamron as Sony have nothing in that range. It's the equivalent to Canon only producing Kit and "L" lenses. Having said that, I'm very happy with my Sigmas and Tamron. ;)

notice that I said "most" not "all" ;)

I think that you will find that Konica Minolta still own those - Sony did not buy all rights & assets from KM.
There's a belief that Sony are having to pay KM a licence fee for the likes of the 70-200mm 2.8 (i.e. Minolta/KM design) or possibly having them built by & buying from KM.
I think that you will find that Sony will bring out thoroughly up to date versions of what they feel they need, it's not really their company ethos to do what you describe (plus tbh I think that the performance/value of e.g. a reincarnated beercan wouldn't actually stand up too well to modern lens designs).

Bought Sony as I used to have a Minolta - and had invested in both a-mount and a-hotshoe.

i have seen those hotshoe adapters but its the fact of having to buy one because of sony's laziness (very sorry sony! all hail sony![Sony][/Sony])

Thanks for the suggestion about Sony ditching the flash mount.....noooooo...!!!!!!

Personally as I have a reasonable investment in the Minolta flash system I prefer to keep that hotshoe mount thank you very much! I wouldn't like to see my flashes becoming useless because Sony took over KM's DSLR business and decided to ditch the hotshoe.

I would obviously have prefered that KM used the standard mount, but that's history and it's not as if you can mount a Nikon flash on a Canon body and expect TTL to work :) [and the adapters are only £10]

I used to hate the mount due to the lack of FS-1200's, but the 'Gadget Infinity' units are perfect for radio triggers (for the flash side)

Maybe PMA will bring some more glass as there will be no DSLR releases. There is talk of a Sony design 50mm f1.8 which would please many.

sometimes i feel like i should have gone for the 450d instead of the a300, simply because canon have been making camera's for 50 years and so that's their speciality unlike sony where there make all eletronics. is it normal to feel this way?

An established brand is not a reason to choose a product though. Sony have been making cameras for many years, they are at the top of their field in professional video cameras. DSLRs are a bundle of electronics which Sony are the one of the best in the world at producing.

very true, sony outclasses any brand in the video industry and so they theoretically aren't that new to camera's.

Plus, don't forget that Sony bought out Minolta so there's a fair amount of camera background there to. I think Sonys DSLR stake will be viewed pretty differently in a couple of years, with them being considered a major contributor.

i had the same reaction. it seems nikon are market leaders, i go to football matches and look at the tog's and most of them have nikon. i still think nikon will put up a fight and it will be a sony v canon v nikon war.

I think it already is in some ways. I notice that, where magazines always used to do Canon v Nikon comparisions, many of them now include Sony.

sony needs to make some new glass

they are doing so.
Also remember that Sony only potentially need 1/2 as many lenses as they don't have to make IS & non-IS versions.

As fo Canon v Nikon v Sony I think that the argument goes that both Canon & Sony are many times the size of Nikon & their camera divisions are just a small part of that (having worked for Canon I can say that the business machines division is definitely their main focus). Thus they have resources available to back them that Nikon don't have & that can support them through lean times in the camera market.
Nikon have to do well in cameras as it's something like 80-90% of Nikon's income.

I see that there are more rumours regarding Olympus' camera division ...

Reasons for me were:
1.) within my budget
2.) had read good reviews
3.) on speaking to staff at my local Jessops they recommended Sony over the others I was looking at
4.) liked the feel of it

Too be fair I have never actually used any other DSLRs before my Sony or any other brand since but I am happy with my A300 and would probably upgrade within the Sony family. That might change though if another takes my fancy when I win the lottery:p
