Indeed, both correct.

Does it really matter?

I chose Canon, others chose Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus... really who cares.

I chose Canon as it suits "me" , people chose what suits them, its not because its Canon I purchased it but because it suits my hands, my style etc.

When I first got properly going with the D-SLR I intended to get my first white, a 70-200 but in the end went for a 70-200 Sigma as I was afraid of being labelled as flash. Not I've caught myself on I couldn't care less what it looked like as long as the photographs are good as that is what matters at the end of the day.

I cant stand this critisism of other makes simply because you own a different one, its the same with phones, tablets etc etc. Its pathetic.

Unfortunately in this thread there have been signs of either jealousy or trolling, certain posters who own the other brand saw fit to call L lenses "tacky", and Canon users "divs".

It seems more likely they were out for a troll, and hoping to start an argument.

The Canon L owners have actually been quite restrained with most answers, IMO.

I can assure you I'm not one bit jealous [seriously? lol] of any white/grey lenses And I certainly did not say tacky for an argument. I have better things to be doing, thanks. If anything your post is more stirring.

I could have bought any Canon Dslr and lenses I wanted when choosing my first FX system. I wasn't tied to any make after selling on all my DX gear. Canon cameras are completely fine, but they can keep the terrible [IMO] lenses. I do think they are tacky, I don't see why that upsets anyone? Or why I should accept being labelled a "troll" for saying so. You'd have to be fairly hardcore defensive and protective about any piece of gear to get upset over it being called tacky. It's just a word to describe how 'I' feel about them. Others may think they are beautiful :shrug:

btw, I own a fuji too, and have had Sony, panasonic and olympus cameras too. I don't do favourites or stick to one make only. The only trolls I see are those overly defensive over a piece of glass. Like they have some ultra pride connection to it! :/

There's an awful bullishness on here goes on whenever anyone just talks straight up, and gives honest opinion. I do a fair bit of aviation photography. I would say that it's fairly even across the board. There is quite a following for the D300 and 300mm 2.8 and 400mm 2.8. I use the 200-400mm. Its perfect for Airshows.
I have a friend who shoots canon. We constantly banter about each others choice. But it's only in jest. That's how it should be kept.
When there are quite a few of us having a big boys day out, often he is in the minority. Often 3-1 in favour of Nikon.
I suppose one day, he'll see the light.....

That's a fair point. In all honesty, calling a lens 'tacky' because of the way it looks is a bit like criticising the colour of someone's car... In the end, it's a personal choice and really doesn't matter!

I don't think the 'tacky' comment really got too many backs up. It was the 'div' comment that managed that. All that that remark did was to make him look stupid!

There's been a big swing towards Fisher-Price - sorry Nikon - cameras on the hill for a while now and with good reason. As it stands, they've got a good set of products that are ideal for aviation photography. I was chatting with one of the other regulars last week and whilst he now has a huge increase in resolution over my 5DMKIII with his D800, I think there are other features that balance things out.

Who cares what you're using as long as you're happy.

I dont know. Maybe tacky has less impact over here? We call strange coloured cars tacky its not really offensive.

Incidentally I only took this so I could wind the guy who owns it up about the colour, I had to cut it in half because having the whole thing in the frame was just too much.

Dont forget, for ease of use, you would also want your lenses to have VROSISVC...

It would have been interesting to see what had happened if there was one standard lens mount. Would have been better for the photographer as the competition would be much higher and you can choose any make of lens you want, i.e. a Nikon lens for your Canon camera and so on. Would also give other manufacturers of bodies a better chance as people would not be so reliant on staying with same manufacturer.

Actually, while I'm on that, I'll say I also find Haselblad camera pugly and tacky looking too. So shoot away ... it ain't just the Canon lenses I dislike the look of [in fact, Sony too have tacky 'whites'] - anyone seen the new Haselblad?

Once you get over £1.2k ish for lenses then it makes financial sense to go Nikon if nothing else. There isn't much in it quality wise although plenty of action folk switched Nikon when the D300 came out purely due to the superb autofocus!

the white (or in my case silver) definitely keeps the lens body cooler in the sun & if youdon't like it you can always put a cover on it.

It's always going to be a bit of a leapfrog thing in terms of both performance & indeed price with replacements. Look at how much more the new Nikon 80-400 is compared to the old one & imagine that applied to the 400, 500 & 600.

I'm a Canon user and would prefer the white L lenses to be black. IMO a big white lens stuck on the front of a black dslr looks 'wrong'. It wouldn't stop me from buying one (my 2 L's are black) but I still would prefer them to be black. IMO the covers look even tackier than the lenses, but I understand their purpose.

I've heard the heat argument a few times, but I think the heat from the sun has at least as big an impact on the camera electronics as on the lens. A sensor will exhibit increased noise if heat rises too high and the camera will eventually shutdown if it gets too hot. I haven't seen Canon make any white DSLRs to combat this and match up with the white lenses.
