Why shouldn't I buy a 7D

Sorry to be blunt but that's simply not a true statement.

OP - depends what you shoot. Sports and wildlife - 7D, people and landscapes 5D IMO

For what I personally shoot, I'd prefer even the original 5D over a 7D.

Missed this!

There's a stop and a bit between them. I.e. 1600 on the 7D looks a wee bit worse than 3200 on the 5D2 IMHO.
 
jonneymendoza, the 7D has worse ISO performance than the 5D2, no doubt about it. 18mp on a cropped sensor vs 21mp on a full frame... the pixel density is vastly reduced with the 5D2 and that immediately lends itself to lower noise in the images. I have the 7D, my mate has the 5D2 and I'm always lusting over how 'clean' the images are.

Sure, the 7D is fantastic but not on the same level as the 5D2 for that sort of thing.

That said, I'm always going to beat him in getting the best shot in a sequence because I have twice as many shots per second :p
 
I love my 7D camera mate the only other close camera Is a 5d mkII but that comes as a price price I believe is new lens they can't be interchange.

So by your logic. My 400d has better noise reduction then a 7d as its same sensor but less mp?

No, you're twisting what I'm saying.
At no point did I mention a comparison between the noise reduction abilities of the 2 cameras, just the basic fact that a higher pixel density tends to create more noise.
The 7D does create cleaner images than the 400D because of the newer noise reduction gubbins and dual processors.

This is all correct. The 5D2 does have better high ISO performance than the 7D and it is because of sensor size and pixel density. Also as stated it does also depend on the technology associated with it. For example the 7D kicks my old 40D squarely in the goolies when it comes to high ISO performance and it was one of the reasons I upgraded!
 
I use a 5DII and a 60D (same sensor as 7D), they make a great pair of bodies for shooting concerts and festivals.
My rule of thumb for creating a clean print with no noise reduction is as follows:
60D @ ISO 2500 -> A3 print (just)
5DII @ ISO 3200 -> A3+ print (no worries)
5DII @ ISO 6400 -> A3+ print (getting borderline, but still better than the 60D @ ISO 2500)

It's not just the amount of noise, it's how much fine detail is present.
As already commented, the noise difference is actually surprisingly small. The key difference is that the amount of fine detail preserved by the 5DII is in a different league.

In regards to 7D vs 5D II ISO performance, I found the 5D to be about a stop better, perhaps even a stop-and-a-half. ISO 800 is the most I can comfortably use on the 7D before noise becomes too apparent whereas 1600 was okay on 5D II.

However, 5D II AF and tracking was really crap on my model so I sold it on. I greatly prefer in focus pictures with a little more noise (7D) to out of focus with less noise (5D II). The 5D has a great sensor and can take some truly amazing stills but it's AF does not belong on a modern camera. I swear my old 20D had better tracking accuracy than the 5D II. The 5D's extra resolution and ISO performance is pretty damn useless when most of my shots turned out oof. The only effective way I found to counter the AF problem was by stopping down, but this meant upping the ISO and sacrificing DOF.

I am sure as a portrait or landscape camera the 5D is great, but I think that a £2k camera should be able to do a bit of everything. If the 5D had 7D AF it would be almost perfect. Unfortunately the 5D is severely hobbled and this is made blatantly apparent by much cheaper Canon and Nikon models. Having moved from a 40D to a 5D II, I was mightily disappointed. Moving on to the 7D put a smile back on my face and saved me £700 at the time.

5d2 is significantly better than the 7d at all isos. go above 800 on the 7d an it's full of chroma noise in the shadows and any noise reduction followed by sharpening creates lovely jaggies. stick to low iso witha 7d and you'll be fine for a crop.
 
Save some cash and get a 5D classic, much better IQ than 7D due to being FF and having a thinner AA filter as well as less noise.
Alternatively I'd look for something like a 1Ds MKii or something, and maybe if you have the cash a mint 5Dii, but then again I'm not really a 7D fan tbh.
 
I shoot alot of non league football, and shoot under some of the worst floodlights you can imagine.

I used to shoot in RAW, and frankly wouldn't go above 3200iso on the 7, but this season have switched over the JPG and the difference is astounding. I have the camera set to use a low level of noise reduction and now I'll happily shoot right up to 5000iso and have usable images. OK some might need a touch of noiseware, but nothing like the level used in RAW therefore I manage to keep more of the detail.

TBF, I don't have a need for huge prints as they're mostly for webuse which makes my life easier..
