I have been considering purchasing one of these "Nifty Fifty" things for a while now but havent really got around to asking about them

Its this one http://www.onestop-digital.com/cata...id=42&osCsid=c7b6a9cdb75b8b2eac26cdcde20734aa

For the D40 f/1.8. I dont know much about them i'm affraid. What can they and cant they do? Do they auto focus, and a bit of a silly question but is the aperture fixed like the focal length? Does anyone have any examples of using one or similar? Ive done a quick search and cant find much.

Thanking you!

f1.8 refers to the maximum aperture, it will close down to f22 as you can see in the picture on osd. In keeping with it's canon brother the nifty fifty is very sharp, is a decent middle distance/portrait lens and the best value for money out there.

a nifty fifty will NOT autofocus on a D40 as lens has no motor in it .

it will give a shallow depth of field @ f 1.8 and the apeture is variable .

I didnt think it would auto focus :( I pretty much only ever use auto focus too!

Hmmmm, someone persuade me I need to get one!

Apart from the obvious points people have mentioned, we tend to forget that the 50mm lens was always the 'standard' lens on a 35mmm camera because when using it the view in the viewfinder represents the size of objects and perspective much as we see them with the naked eye.

It used to be argued that gaining experience with a 50mm lens was a good discipline to impose on yourself before moving on to wider or longer lenses.

You can't not have one! It's the most sharp lens available. The only downside is the non-AF for the D40/x.

I Have a d40 and the lens in question and manual focus isnt that bad with a little practise im sure you will get faster and faster focusing :)

I would recommend getting on even without the auto focus its still a cracking bit of kit and produces great images

Another option is to go for a Sigma 30mm f1.4 instead. This will autofocus on the D40, and will give a field of view equivalent to 45mm on a 35mm camera. Its also slightly 'faster' f1.4 as opposed to f1.8. It does cost a fair bit more though.
