Why shoot nude?

Well, not sure what my other half would think of me photographing nudes. She'd probably want to be present, and I don't really have a problem with that, saves me finding another friend to take as my security blanket!
 
Let's just cut to the quick and get rid of the pretentious posturing: the reason people photograph nudes is for sexual gratification.

The "artistic" justification is just hyperbole used in order to get the model nekkid, and to try and persuade themselves and others that it's somehow more worthy than just getting cheap jollies.

A bit sweeping that and not applicable in many cases, I'd have thought - a lot of 'straight' female photographers shoot female nudes and I doubt there's much of a sexual frisson going on between them at shoots like that - or some of the boudouir shoots that are becoming increasingly popular...

Would you care to comment further?
I suspect a lot of people who shoot nudes here, including myself will violently disagree with you on this...
 
Gay, straight or bi it's highly unprofessional and anyone professing that I only shoot nudes to get my rocks off had better make sure I don't have access to those bricks ;)

Sorry yes I should have qualified that as the straight male photographers.

Of course, how deep the self-deception lies depends on the individual.

Personally, I'm happy to admit that I photograph stuff as an extension of my ego, in an effort to gain attention, notoriety, and to persuade people of my value and of how interesting I am. It's in essence part of a complex mating ritual, though obviously whether or not I follow through with it is entirely a different question.

Now that I'm competent, it's also a means to get cash.

Which is nice.

So that point is completely irrevelant. And, it was a bit ridiculous too! If I ever thought to myself "I'm going to shoot nudes just to get my rocks off" I'll hang up the camera and call it a day. I'm not a photographer to get my rocks off. I'm a photographer because I love trying to create photographs I find visually pleasing. And someday I might even achieve that :lol:

So you're saying that ALL straight males get a sexual 'kick' from photographing naked women? Please tell me how you can even attempt to justify a statement like that without the evidence to back it up! Can you show me hard documentary evidence to support your conjecture or is this just something you've plucked out of thin air based on your own 'opinion'?

Seriously though, I shoot nudes in an attempt to produce an image that is visually pleasing. Either in an uncomfortable provocative sense or just something beautiful.
I don't think nakedness reduces everyone to look the same especially as many models have piercings and tattoos.
 
One could even go so far as to suggest that any straight male photographer who didn't find female nudes sexually gratifying might like to consider a course of oysters, or perhaps his actual commitment to describing himself as straight.

Hehe... Good point Ali! :D

I just told my girlfriend what MykyD said and her reply was less than complimentary. In short, she said that if models were to subscribe to his hairbrained theory, they'd never agree to a shoot ever again! I think someone needs to get out from behind his copy of Playboy and shoot some real women (if anyone will work with him).

imo it varies... You see a lot of 'group shoots' advertised on MM etc where 'cameras are provided' and that they will be 'working to full nude', and certainly one (different to these) group shoot I have been to I came away with a very, uh, creepy vibe from certain other people in attendance, and there weren't even any nude models.

OTOH there is some really great work out there that can only be described as art, however there is also a lot of the other end - hell, there are 'models' who do it as their full time job, getting their baps out for (generally) middle aged 'photographers'... pretty full spectrum imo.

I haven't been sexually gratified by a still image since I was about 16 and discovered real girls...

I think maybe you need to get out more...
Trust me - there is nothing even remotely erotic about shooting a naked girl when the mojo just decided to take the day off...
It's work, pure and simple - the job is to get the shot, not get laid...

Some day when you grow a little older and wiser you'll realise that not everything is about that little dangly thing between your legs. And even believing the thought that "If I don't feel some sexual gratification from seeing a female nude, then I'm gay". Dude, I'm starting to laugh now :lol:. What age are you by the way? You're very much sounding like a teenager with overactive hormones to be honest... in my opinion of course!

I must confess that I was at a studio party once with loads of "Glamour" Togs. If there was ever a bunch of people that a Mother would tell her Daughter to stay well clear of, they were there! Seriously weird bunch :cuckoo:

Group sessions do attract the GWCs unfortunately...herd-instinct makes them feel safer in front of naked flesh...

I think my wife was on here and got suspended :shrug: :p

On topic, I've always admired the female form, and my reluctance to shoot glamour & nude is exactly for the issues that Mordor raised :shake:

However, very recently a friend of mine and I decided to venture into studio work and have been seriously contemplating shooting glamour (we dare not even think of nudes / emplied nudes) but for the life of us we can't find models in our part of the world :shrug: :thinking:

Personally, I want to shoot nudes to get into body-scapes to compliment the landscapes I so much love, but this is proving to be uneasy getting off the ground.
 
Wail - to do this kind of work, you'll have to travel, I think...you know why local girls won't even get in a room with another guy, let alone get undressed - even a bit...
Iraq used to be the 'go-to' location for this kind of thing back in the day as they had comparitively liberal laws and the women there had freedoms most Arab women only dream of...sadly no longer thanks to us...
USA, Europe, maybe Israel are your best bets, I'm afraid...

You, obviously, have been around these parts of the world; but I may be able to pull something off here. I am working on this rather diligently, and hopefully will be able to do it without upsetting the law as well.

The only thing to remain, is to see how to post the shots without getting the girls in trouble. Keep in mind, please, these aren't porn shots at all, this is purely implied-nude and glamour that I am looking at; but to some, they're all the same :thumbsdown:
 
Wail, some of the best nude shots I've seen haven't shown the models' faces at all, and I'm guessing that nobody in your part of the world would recognise any woman (possibly including their own wives) without the face showing. A couple of strategically placed veils can also work wonders - not only to conceal identities but to add a hint of mystique.

And why would they be arested? It's not a crime in this country if you're not doing any harm.

It's interesting to note that a lot of models look way more erotic in clothes than out of them. I well posed art nude is just that - art. A badly posed nude can be someting else altogether.

True that, technically public nudity is not against the law. Although, if the police asked them to cover up they would have to abide by the requests though or else then they can be arrested. I think it's only against the law if you are purposely going out to shock or distress people by your nudity.

While public nudity is not an offence, there are plenty of other offences that can be considered. All you need is one complainant. Especially if it's the tog who is nude! Looks upward at Joe! ;)
