I'm sure this topic has been discussed, but I'm new here, so why not touch on it again. :P

Why does photography appeal to you guys? Aside from a hobby or even a career.

To me, I love catching a glimpse of someone just as they are. I give cudos to people who shoot in studio and do formal portraits, but for me, I'd rather see people as they are and be able to give that to them as a reminder.

Also, when shooting film, I used to love the thrill of getting the prints back. Going through each of them, analyzing every single shot (and usually only liking a few lol). But that first glimpse of an awesome moment gets me every time. I still try not to look at shots in my viewfinder, just to get that feeling when I import now.

Give me a camera, a willing subject (or even a non-willing one) and honestly... I'm completely happy if only for a few shots.

I used to take my p+s everywhere with my snapping pics of friends and anything i found interesting after a while i thought u know what this is fun i'm gonna try it properly - so i got a dslr and i'm still trying to do it properly:thinking:

I only feel content when there's a camera in my hands

ever since I was a kid I have wanted to take GOOD pics you know you see something and want a picture just as you see it not washed out or out of focus ect. then when I started my new job the call was there to get a good camera to pics for our website , that was the only excus I needed ;) so I went and bought a good second hand 10D/17-40 with my own money. and now I am getting more and more into it.

Something I have always been interested in but never had time or money to do properly, getting this camera was amazing, will be interesting to see how things develop now.

'cos I can
'cos I enjoy the experience
'cos it fits into my life
'cos occasionally I'll know I've pushed the shutter at exactly the right time

I guess I love capturing a moment exactly the way I see it, well that and I might get the chance to take pictures of girls in their pants... ;)

Why photography ?
or why film...

cant answer the first one, I suppose its a creative challenge.
I'm with you on the film use, though I dont need prints to keel over, just watching the B/W negs slip off the reel and holding them up to window light for the first time...dripping wet, gets me all......interested:suspect:
The killer is slides, 6x6 transparencies are the most beautifull thing ever....fuji velvia....mmm.....cough...grrr...fart, scratches bum flexes biceps......so Hatton for the win them ehh....grr.

For me it's seeing what the unaided eye can't see. Macro and strobes to catch moments in time ;)

Couldn't have put it better!!!!

And I'll add :

'cos I love it when someone says of one of my images "I like that"

Because it lets me show people how amazing things are.

I see everything as a photograph it's hard to shut off sometimes. Now that I have my own business I don't have as much time for recreational photography but theres nothing more relaxing than getting out and about with your camera:)

I studied Graphic Design and figured that it wasn't for me... I want to be the one that goes out and gets the images. The one that is allowed to see different aspects to things and allowed to look at the world in a different way. I didn't want to be the one who sends off for images and just use them.

:)

I dunno, but I constantly find myself (walking, in the train, bus...etc) looking and thinking "that would make a good shot" or "wish i have my camera with me".

I mean ALL the time, even sub-consciously.

Because it lets me show people how amazing things are.

Indeed- some things would not even be known about if were not for photography. Check out David Malin's long exposure astrophotography work:

http://www.aao.gov.au/images/general/favourites.html

David Malin pioneered work with sensitve film emulsions and innovative darkroom techniques to enhance & bring out faint detail in photos. Many of these ideas are used today as Photoshop algorithms!

My favourite David Malin/Anglo Australian Observatory Image- the Vela supernova remenant which is not visible to the human eye.

just to keep a visual record of my family life . started off with a 35mm zenit in 85 two years before my first daughter was born ,got three girls now and its nice to look back at them when they were babies .little fat winstons the lot of them ,bit then when they get older they tell you where to poke the camera when you try to point it at them ,so its on to other things , because you caught the bug years ago and you just cant put the thing down , you must keep taking pictures . i must resist , yes nikon i hear you im coming to get you ..........................

Listen, I hate photography.

When I can't get out with my camera, I'm miserable.
When I can get out and can't get any snaps, I'm miserable.
When I can get some photos and they're not good, I'm miserable.
When I get a good one and can't decide on the PP, I'm miserable.
When I see the standard of photography on forums like this and know that I'll never be that good, I'm miserable.
I spend too much money on kit and that makes me miserable, but not as miserable as when I can't afford what I really want. And if I could afford it, I know that it wouldn't do my photograpahy any good and that makes me miserable.

Call this a hobby; bl**dy purgatory, if you ask me.

But ain't it just grand when you get a keeper - wipes out all the misery.
