Is my iMac slowing down?

Starting up is taking a tad longer than it used to, and editing from lightroom to CS4 is getting a bit laggy too.

I know next to nothing about how OS X snow moggy works, does it need a defrag a la windoze every so often?

Tell it your going to buy a windows based system if it doesn't buck it's idea's up.

I know nothing of X other than the machines on which it is installed are horribly expensive! A bit like your office I guess it will need tidying, all workspace will get untidy in time.

Have you checked your start up items to see if these have built up / are excessive:

Finder>Macintosh HD>Library>Startupitems

P.S. also look at:

Finder>Applications>System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items

Download iStat and see if you notice a process using up more resources than it should do.

Windows doesn't need defragmenting unless you are using FAT16 or an earlier file system. It's a myth put about by people that call themselves "power users."
