Insurance at best always seems like a legal scam so, I get insured for my equipment. Sell some equipment to upgrade (or down) - 6d to 5d3 and 24-70 to 35mm 1.4. Price adjustment is around £600 less - firstly I'm told the lens can't be insured under listed items as it's less than 1k - fair enough, it goes into misc. but since I'm on there minimum insured price won't go down... why starts and then the bombshell - If I have more photographic equipment (let's say some small lenses, triggers etc etc that I don't use for my business as they're useless) and I make a claim, I'd not get the cover I paid for as I haven't listed all my equipment! What!!!! Why should I list all my equipment?

Even though I've given specifics of what I want insured with serials etc - aaduki answer is even then.

Go figure!

I had to make a claim with them at start of the year and was dealt with very quickly and promptly. Had a cheque in less than 3 weeks, and it would have been quicker if I had not faffed around!!

You need to read and understand what averaging means in insurance terms. Every insurer does this, even if they don't tell you.

What Hugh said. That's a reason not to have insurance rather than to avoid any particular firm.

Exact same thing if I under declare the value of the contents of my house.

Wait I am confused. Can someone clarify what all this means?

Basically if you under insure any payout will be reduce by the % you've underinsured by. So if you insured £12ks worth of kit for £9k and then claimed for a £4k camera the payout would be reduced by 25%. Don't underinsure

:thumbs:OK! Cheers Hugh.

I can't believe I'm sticking up for insurance companies.....

Imagine you are insuring a bucket of cash. There's £1,000 in it but you only insure £500 of it. Half of it gets stolen. The insurance won't pay £500. They will cover half of it. In fact you could count yourself lucky that they don't say that their half is safe and it was the uninsured amount that got stolen.)

A pot of unnamed items is just like that.

Named items should be fine - you could easily insure one camera and not another from an identical pair. Though they will want serial numbers in case one gets damaged and you become "confused" which you were insuring :)

Sorry - your wrong JonathanRyan - I would be happy if that were the case. I have listed three items I want insured; 1 body, 1 lens, 1 flash. I have given exact names, serial numbers and costs. got quote and paid.

Roll on eye-opener day - aaduki say that if I have other equipment it needs to be insured too otherwise I am not declaring properly? what? :cuckoo:

I state that I am not going to claim for an unlisted 1dx, only items for which I have provided serials etc etc. Nope I got told, this isn't how insurance works! Yes, I am confused! Please tell me I am wrong!

Nope they are confused.

My insurers can't insist I insure stuff that's nothing to do with them.

ETA: I'm no longer with Aaduki, but when I was it looked for a while like a camera had gone missing in the post to Nikon. They told me I wasn't covered. I asked them to send a copy of the policy with the relevant section marked. They agreed that no such section existed and so I was actually covered...... Wouldn't be the first time a "junior member of staff" had made something up misinterpreted the guidelines.

How do they decide if something uninsured is related enough to the insured thing to trigger averaging?
If you put your wallet in your camera bag have you undervalued your camera gear? What about if it's your phone, which you could potentially view/sort/process/publish photos on? What about if it's something not in your bag but on your person and someone mugs you, making off with the lot?
